[DMCForum] windshield myth busted... [was: Serious door alignment issue]

Well we have yet another myth to bust here.  When I stripped the roof of my
car, three of the four bolts for the hinges snapped off almost flush with
the fiberglass.  To get these out I pounded them with a hammer to break the
resin holding them in place.  You could watch the entire roof section and
windshield bounce up and down quite dramatically and the only thing that
happened was the hinge studs came out.

My windshield has a good sized bull's-eye crack in it where the rear view
mirror mounts but never spread after the repeated hitting of the roof
section.  When I say I was hitting the roof, I mean I was really hitting
hard with no concern about the glass since it will be replaced anyway.

Also, we replaced a local owner's windshield recently and the metal strips
on either side of the windshield had rubber strips  underneath to keep them
off of the glass.  Walt, I remember you telling me once that you saw one
crack when these were put back on but after doing this I don't see how that
could happen.  I have to wonder if it was extremely cold when this happened,
or if the glass was chipped, weak, or cracked anyway.  I did notice on my
car that it had what looked like black electrical tape around the edges of
the front windshield but I don't know if that is factory or not.

Oh, and most importantly was what Rich did with his car in Ohio.  Josh's
driveway was fully occupied with vehicles so Rich decided to go around
another car which took him up a slight hill.  I don't know if Rich knew
this, but he went three-wheeling for a short distance which looked to be way
more than what anyone could do with a jack.  His windshield also has a crack
and it didn't seem to get any worse after his off-roading adventure.
