[DMCForum] Re: Marc-like discussion on taxes...includes De Loreans

Greg,

I fixed that problem: Got the previous owner on my D to write me a
letter saying he was my uncle and the car was a gift. So I paid 0 in
sales tax.

Tax bill would have been over $1,200 otherwise. Screw that. I think
it's total BS they can continue taxing something that has already been
taxed. The previous owner paid tax on the car when it was new. They
shouldn't be able to tax it again.

No you can't. Most states have what they call a "use tax". If you
bring something into the state you're supposed to fill out a form and
send it, along with a check for the sales tax amount, to the state.
There are some Indian reservations across the borer from me in Idaho,
and people routinely drive there to buy cigarettes. Since there is no
tax, the prices are like 1/4 what you pay here. A couple of years ago
they setup sting operations where they watched Washington State titled
cars leaving the stores on the reservations, then radioed their
buddies who pulled you over as soon as you crossed the border. Your
cigarettes were seized and the fines totaled in the thousands of
dollars - tens of thousands for those unfortunate few who bought more
than a certain number of cartons.

Technically, they can do this with anything you buy. Cigarettes were
just an easy target this time around.
