Re: [doc] Auto transmission

The auto gearbox gearing is designed to be in 3rd when the solenoids are NOT energised. The electrical solenoids when energised activate the gearing to change to 1st or second.
If the car is in 1st then one of the shift solenoids is energised. I would check the electrics first.
Try removing fuse #7 (if my memory is right but, check with owners manual,) to disable the auto computer and drive in the morning. The car should be in 3rd and difficult to set off. If it is in 1st then it is likely to be a sticky solenoid.

You can get seal sweller to put in the oil to (surprisingly) swell the seals giving them a (temporary?) lease of life. I wouldn't think it is worth it to strip the box down yet.

Hope this helps,

NickT.

Hi Paul

I'm not going to be a lot of help here because I'm going to tell you
what it isn't....

I'm sure someone might jump in and blame the transmission governor, but
this is designed to get stuck in 3rd if it fails AFAIK

The bit where the tranny meets the engine is the final drive and takes
regular gear oil. Probably just driveshaft seals weeping (v common after
24 years, but usually only a couple of drips a week!)
