I just replaced my thermostat and had no problems like that. From 
what i remember i did not need to take the w pipe off....double check 
the bolt above the throttle spool. I have the throttle shield and 
forgot to put it on right away and it squeeled like a pig....make 
sure all bolts are tight as each are a possible vaccum leak my center 
bolt is fairly stripped so i carefully tighten mine
