My Nissan 100NX (NX1600) USED to be mechanical drive on an analog speedo.
I now have a Digital Dash using a sort of generator instead of the cable,
which could be swapped out on the gearbox fairly easy.
It uses a "classic" mechanical drum-type odo- and tripmeter, driven by
a little steppermotor and I have since found out that NX's with analog
gauges from 1993 and on also use this stepper motor to drive the speedo.

But as the gearing is probably different than on a DeLorean you'd need
additional gears to calibrat the whole thing. So I don't bother...

It's actually two gears, both with 45 degree teeth, that's why you can
rotate it "the otherway round" too; if it was a pure worm gear it would
be impossibble to drive the spindle-cable by turning on the output cable.

You can see one of the gears of my old, irrepairable drive here:

Or if Yahoo screws up the link; go to the photo's section, select
"Techie Stuff" (might need to click "show next 7", then "Angle Drive"...

I can't find the old drive here, so I can't check the ratio,
but I don't think it's 1:1...
