Aha! - they're called screw gears. Very inefficient and extremely prone to failure if not kept lubricated.... Why has nobody redesigned the angle drive to use bevel gears? They'd be much more tolerant and reliable

I can't find the old drive here, so I can't check the ratio,
but I don't think it's 1:1...

I have a feeling that screw gears do not work unless the ratio's 1:1 but I am not sure
