Re: [doc] OT - Buying cars in general

The XUD series of diesels in the older Peugeots and Citroens are one of
the most reliable engines ever made. Apart from head gaskets at
approximately 150,000 miles, they are like clockwork and are entirely
mechanical. Incredibly reliable, and good for over 60mpg on a long run.
Service interval is 6000 miles but is just an oil and filter which comes
in at less than 20 quid if you use the cheap stuff and do it yourself -
which incidentally couldn't be easier on those engines. The turbos are a
lot faster and more fun to drive. Look out for the Citroen ZX Volcane
which is the fastest diesel with one of those engines and is basically
the same as the 306 but a damn site more comfortable, and cheaper
because it doesn't have the image of the 306. I hate 306's for the
driving position, but that's just me.

Diesels are only more noisy at idle and low revs - commonly called
"valve clatter". At speed, they're often quieter than petrols (cite
Citroen Xantia HDi 90 vs 2.0 16v petrol, the HDi was quieter in a
drive-by noise test).

You touched ona subject close to my heart - my DeLorean is the only car
I've ever owned that wasn't a diesel. I had a Citroen BX DTR Turbo which
had the 1.7 turbo XUD. Verity now has one of her own - shame she can't
drive it yet! I now drive a Xantia HDi 110 and it's these modern diesels
that are converting many people to the oil burners! I had my BX from
114,000 to 185,000 miles and my Xantia's gone from 21,000 to 130,000 and
still going strong doing 160 miles a day currently. Service interval on
an HDi (peugeot or Citroen) is 12,500 miles. If you go for an HDi, do
try and get a 110 as although more powerful, are actually more
economical and cleaner.  Work that one out! Insurance might be nasty for
you though
