Re: [doc] OT - Buying cars in general

I too can claim to be a petrol head converted to diesel.  Newer
diesels, especially 'common rail' diesels are very quiet and also much
cleaner then their petrol equivalent.  To give you a comparison from
my own personal experience, a Clio 1.5 dCi 80 will average over 64mpg
and only costs £85 per year in road tax due to low emissions, a 1.2i
16v petrol equivalent will average mid 40's mpg and cost £105 per year
in tax.  Plus the diesel will kick the petrol's ass in acceleration
due to all the low down torque.  One of my Megane's from last year
which had the brilliant 1.9 dCi 120 engine and 6 speed gearbox held
its own in a "spot of enthusiastic driving" with a Golf GTi (shant say
where or when!!) and lets just say he couldnt shake me...... ;o)
One recommendation I would make though, if buying an older diesel car,
get a French one as they make the best diesels, and get one with power
steering cos they can be heavy old buggers even in the smaller models.
However, I will be going back to petrol in March as my next demo is
gonna be an automatic due to a recurrance of a knee injury :o(
