I tried lubricating both the ends of the cable while moving it in and out, as 
well as the linkage at the pedal, and all the geegaws back to and including 
the microswitch, which has a nice on-off click as the pedal is worked. It 
seems to work real smoothly. I used white lithiuim spray grease. But no 
improvement. Could it be something else, like the idler motor? Mine looks, 
on the outside at least, like it spent the last 18 years underwater with the 
body dies off of Ireland.
