Yes, he did use the Volvo block.  I have one in my garage now as a donor.

He used the Electromotive as it worked better with the boost enrichment at the time.  The MS may have caught up in that regard now.

I believe that he used the Volvo block for a stronger bolt pattern on
the crank, with the Eagle PRV crank, sleeves, cams, and heads installed.

PRV is an awesome engine IMO. An almost univeral fit, and LOTS of
torque. But we've just got the long end of the stick because of the
smaller intake ports, and odd-fire timing. Changing these over is the
biggest pain you have to contend with.

John's engine is quite impressive. But if you're going to build one,
I'd really reccomend the MegaSquirt system, rather than the
Electromotive setup he used. The difference between the two is like
$3000 versus $500-$700 depending upon what options you choose.
