What other space craft can you compare the shuttle with to determine how
difficult, reliable, expensive and temperamental it is?

How can you possibly compare anything about the shuttle to any other
aircraft?

All of the other stuff you mention is just media-hyped bullshit.  Any
aircraft can have problems when it is first put into service.  Some repair
costs are higher and some lower than others, yes, but headlines about how
the newest billionist airplane is failing sells newspapers.  You won't see
the media hype anything that is completely successful and works perfectly.
How may perfect shuttle launches went off without so much as a mention?

I don't recall a media sensation when every engine on every B-52 in service
was exchanged for a newer improved engine, along with a different pod
design.  The reason all of these older planes are kept around is that all
airframes have a finite life time.  When that time is reached, or
prematurely based on excessive wear and or stress, the plane is pulled from
service no matter who's logo is on the side.

If I am wrong on any of this, I know of at least two aircraft people on this
list who can set me straight. :)

The Space Shuttle is just like a European automobile -- overpriced,
fussy & temperamental, difficult and expensive to maintain, too small
to be useful, unreliable away from home, falling apart prematurely
(have I left anything out?).

It's like all the new aircraft that were supposed to revolutionize our
military. What's the backbone of SAC -- good old B-52. Vietnam era
C-130's are the workhorse in Iraq (with Vietnam era C-141's and C-5's
thrown in for good measure). CH-47 is still the SEALS helicopter of
choice (can't blame them -- I'd shoot myself in the foot before I flew
in a Blackhawk). Air Force is still flying the Electra (Orion) for
crying out loud. KC-135 too.

Perhaps there's a reason all this vintage equipment is being kept
around -- according to today's AP, F-18's are suffering an excessive
number of brake failures upon landing. Doesn't anyone build anything
right anymore?

And you all have the gall to question my choice of tried & true fuel
metering technology...
