If the tappets are hydraulic they should be able to compensate for
wear. That's the beauty of hudraulics/pushrods -- never need
adjusting! I'm used to hydraulic lifters (OHV), but the principle is
the same. You do need to be careful with oil changes because glued up
hydraulics defeat the purpose. I unstuck the lifters in my little
brother's AMC by running a wicked brew of diesel fuel, kerosene, and
fuel injector cleaner through the crankcase (idling in the driveway
only).
