I also think that he was trying to protect his kids. Wasn't there a
threat on his whole family if he didn't go along with them?

I'm pretty sure he didn't intend to deal in drugs to save his company
unless he was somehow forced. 

And I'm even more sure that he didn't have a coke habit. If that were
true, the news articles would all have mentioned that 'Mr. DeLorean
has had previous problems with cocaine' or something similar.
