A lot of the Crude processed in Refineries is purchased using prices
determined by long term contracts.
 
The prices quoted daily are spot market prices or future prices.
 
Also, there are many different types of Crude available, some less costly
than others.
 
Not all refineries are configured to run the same types of Crude.
 
Regional price differences can be caused by the type of crude a refinery
uses, gasoline specifications (vapor pressures, sulfur content, additives,
oxygenates), federal, state and local taxes, transportation costs, refinery
capacities, production interruptions from Hurricanes or other weather
related events.
 
One thing that would help to equalize regional price differences is uniform
fuel specifications throughout the U.S.
 
California specifications are different than Alabama's.  Counties in the
same State can have different fuel specs.
 
All of the above mentioned  contribute to the fuel price you pay across the
U.S.
 
Today, name brand regular costs $1.96/gallon in Mobile.
 
Tomorrow, it will change.
