Don't use a grit that fine unless you want it to be as polished as John's!  For the factory finish, the 80, then 120, then blending pad works well.

There is an art to it that I don't really have.  Fortunately, there is a Chris Nicholson.

220/400/600/800/1000/2000 then you should be fine.
I prefer the sandpaper, its faster just be careful because to much pressure can remove the grain although that will still take awhile so you would notice
I am actually removing my grain to have a mirror like finish.

But you can just go with grain only both wet and dry sand
Good luck its a loooong process but can be done cheaply
I've done two fenders and the t top and that's taken me about 60 hours, yes 60!
But just scratches should be a fraction on that
