Abandon the stock wire harness.  It is set up for the old style "common ground" for the speakers.  Most modern systems use "floating ground".

Tap in to the harness for power, but run new speaker wires.

You can find a few modern "shaft style" radios that will fit, however most people go with the newer "DIN Style" that will require you to either replace the entire bracket with a new one, or cut it.
