I suspect that the wet drive has nothing to do with your problem. If the exhaust manifold is too hot I would suspect a lean mixture. If the Cat is too hot there is too much fuel. The idle is a separate system and usually, hot exhaust or not, the idle should try to go to normal. The hot exhaust may have always been there and the idle system has shut down?

In any event, be methodical in your diagnosis. A hot exhaust does not necessarily mean a fast idle to me. I believe you have more than one issue.
