Re: [DML] Re: windshield replacement

A gentleman called me about 6 months back from the southwest part of the US to ask me about replacement windshields (he got my info from some old DMA officer list I guess)
He is in the business of making after market windshields for exotic and rare cars. He had a customer with a Delorean and was looking to possibly have a mold made to make new windshields. He wanted to know if the club would be interested, or if I had knowledge about what happened to the original molds.

Being limited on that info, I told him what I could, and also that Houston and Grady sold NOS shields (but with delamination)

He went on to say he never heard of Houston or Grady, but he spoke to a delorean shop in California (I presume Delorean One) and the guy there was not helpful to him.

I gave him info and contact names and never heard from him again.

One interesting thing to note was he made a comment about delamination not being an issue, and if you can't see it under the edges of the windshield molding, then its fine..... Everyone has an opinion I guess. ;)

I spoke to the company that build replacement DMC windshields back in the 80's. The business was sold, along with all of the tooling. The tools for the after market DMC windshield were destroyed.

To create a new tool would cost about $12,000, and they would only run production for no less than 100 units (there is a per unit cost on top of the tool cost).

IMHO, it would take too long to sell 100 windshields at ANY price to make it a worth while investment. If someone disagrees, I'd be happy to share my research.
