The engine did die, but I re-started it and drove for a few more seconds 
to help get the car off the road. Not sure if it goes with your theory 
or not.

I have considered the possibility that the distributor itself failed in 
some way. If so, that would be convenient, since I have to replace the 
distributor anyway. :-)
