[DML] Re: What's it worth?

The Rule-of-Thumb is that you will spend $20-25K on the car if it was
not maintained and in decent shape. This includes the purchase price,
parts, and labor. You have to be realistic and have the finaces to be
able to spend a lot of money on the car after you buy it. Sometimes it
is worth it to spend more to buy a better one than to buy one that
needs a lot of work and will take a lot of time and money to get it
reliable and pretty. If you do buy the "beater" just figure on doing
everything from the cooling system to the motor, brakes,
weatherstripping, battery, S/S, fuel system, tires, etc. Get the car
up in the air and look the frame over. If it is rusted out you must
figure that into your offer. That can be expensive and may be the
deal-breaker. The painted S/S is a tip/off that one or more panels
were damaged, filled with body filler and painted. The paint can be
removed and the S/S regrained but you will have to deal with repairing
or replacing the damaged panel (s).
