Subject: Re: Re: Tuning Idle Speed Circuit. (was: Re: idle problem)

Having taken all the advice I could get from the list and the archives, I
have attempted to set up both the CO mixture as well as the CIS idle. This
was fiddled with by the previous owner and never properly reset. I set the
(CO Mixture Screw) air/fuel mixture using an exhaust gas analyzer at 14.1:1
with CO emmission at less than 1%. Idle set was 750 and varied about 50rpms
high and low. The frequency valve could be heard at idle at a relatively
constant and stable pitch. The engine appeared to run very smoothly.
However, upon shutting it off, it would not restart! I then advanced the
mixture screw by 1/8th turn intervals clockwise until the engine was able to
start. The idle was erratic and fluctuated several hundred RPMs hunting
wildly. The frequency valve buzzed on the lean upswings and was silent on
the downswings. I then adjusted the CO screw (by ear) until the engine ran
smooth again but I could see by the analyzer that it was running on the rich
side to get it to settle down. I then set the idle again to 750. This time
the idle remained on 750 exactly with no fluctuation at all but the
frequency valve remained silent. I assume that this is due to the very rich
mixture. The engine seems to run fine set like this but I realize that I am
essentially nullifying the lambda system with the over-rich mixture. The
engine has been checked methodically and no vacuum leaks can be found. All
o-rings, tubing and fuel system parts including pump, accumulator and hot
start kits are new. The engine has only 8,000 miles on it.
I was hoping that someone on the list with a pefectly operationg system
might answer the following questions:

1. At idle, should the frequency valve buzz constantly and steadily?
2. With the O2 sensor unplugged, I am able to set up everything exactly to
spec. and the engine runs smooth and perfect. As soon as I reconnect it,  it
hunts wildly again and I am forced to adjust the CO mix again to get it to
settle down! Why is this happening?
3. At 750 idle, should the CIS adjust to compensate for the A/C load or does
the idle normally drop 100 RPMs?

Your input will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rustproof

Subject: DeLorean spare tire

A question popped up to my mind, all the way since I read from one DeLorean website that the trunk ( do you really call it trunk when it's in front of the car? A Finnish word for it 'tavaratila' does not specify where in the car it is, does the word 'trunk'?) Anyway, that's off the subject...

I read that the spare tire is located, where is most cars, under the trunk. And as in most cars, it is a compact, smaller than the normal wheels. One thing that caught my interest was that it said that the trunk won't fit the regular wheel. So if a blowout does  occur, where would you put the blown tire? In the lap of the passenger? Or is there an empty space in the rear on the engine lid, could you put the wheel there or is the lid strong enough to carry some weight? Or do you clog some exhaust-intake vents by doing so?

I have nevver seen a DeLorean, although I will go test drive one and the only DeLorean in this country next week, but by looking at the pictures it seems that there's an empty space on the engine.

What would you do if you'd have a tire blow out and you'd have to put on the spare tire, leave the blown out tire and wheel on the road ?

Subject: Re: Idle speed

If you are having a lot of trouble getting the motor to idle down and
you have to hit the pedal to do it one thing to check is the "quadrant
link". It is the piece that connects the throttle spool to the
throttle plates. It is a short link with a ball fitting on each end (a
miniature version of the type on the struts) with a left and right
hand thread (1 on each end) for a very precise fit. I have seen a lot
of cars that have a lot of play in the ball sockets and on 1 high
mileage car the ball on the throttle spool was rocking back and forth!
With that much play in the throttle linkage you aren't always getting
the engine back to idle. The whole linkage must move freely with as
little play as possible. I also see were the throttle cable needs to
be lubricated and on some cars the wire was fraying by the throttle
spool. The moral here is before you go condeming the idle system you
need to have all the simple stuff working right. BTW do not try to
remove the quadrant link without first removing the locking pins (just
like the struts)! It would be a good idea to lubricate these points
once in a while. Lubricate the throttle cable as per the throttle
cable recall with anti-freeze. I try not to get into control theory
but for those that do understand it they would leave the idle system
stock and fix the "real" problem and not blame the idle system for
something it cannot do. As for vacuum leaks if the valve covers or
timing covers are affecting you idle quality check the fittng inside
the neck by the breather. It is supposed to limit the vacuum intoduced
into the crankcase sort of like a pcv valve. If it is missing or has
been enlarged then you are loosing too much vacuum into the crankcase.

I will second this, Optima's are by far the best battery you can buy. They
do cost about $50 more than your average, but they will not leak acid like a
convential battery and thus damage the interior of your car. There is also
no "battery odor" because they are totally sealed.

I will mention that their newest version has top AND side mounts, there are
plugs that cover the mounts you aren't using. You can generally get them at
any Sears Auto Center...

Hey group,

I heard a pretty substantiated rumor last night from a
DMC investor that some of the investor cars (like 4981
that sits in my contact's garage) were delayed from
earlier models (he was sheduled 2051, so he claims)
due to "Overseas Shipments".  This was communicated
via telephone from JDZ representatives to those
investors (like my contact).

The grapevine (unsunbstantiated) is that a LOT of the
low VIN cars were delivered to Saudi Arabia and other
middle Eastern states.  A friend of mine in US Army
Intel confimred that he saw no less than 2 dozen
ruined ones in a sand pit in Kuwait when he was there
10 years ago, and even more in Saudi.

Has anyone heard of this before?

It sounds to me like your Lambda system just died. Troubleshoot to
find the reason (very common for the relay to die). Since the Lambda
wasn't adding fuel you compensated by going overly rich with the
mixture screw. You should hear the frequency valve buzz whenever the
engine is running. You are almost there, get the Lambda running again
and it sounds to me like you have it just about right! (Of course
readjust the mixture screw with the Lambda running).

I'm sure all of the DeLorean vendors have what you are looking for but I
make my own automatic pan gasket from a sheet of cork gasket material from
the auto parts store. Valve covers use RTV and the exhaust gaskets can be
gotten at the Volvo dealer for the 2.8 engine.

That's true, but the throttle plate shaft has its own spring.  If the
throttle plate mechanism is aligned, clean, and lubricated, that spring
should close the throttle plates, (as long as the "quadrant link" isn't
stopping it). If you use the throttle spool spring via the quadrant link to
force the throttle plates closed, you can end up with excessive slack in the
throttle cable.

Beg to differ. Had terrible vacuum leak where passenger valve cover
overlapped timing chain cover (mating surfaces not quite flush).
Steady pin point stream of solvent would kill engine. If that isn't a
vacuum leak don't know what is.

Still have bad leak around timing cover crank seal. Most likely way
that air is entering engine is via valve covers (vs block seal).

Rich A just plugged vacuum leaks in his cam access plates, again under
valve covers.

Have you ever heard of anyone running PRV with valve covers removed?

Martin G/Darren B know engine pretty well (in variety of marques). If
valve cover vacuum leaks were bogus surely they would have said
something by now.

You are correct, there is a spring on the throttle plate shaft. On
many of the cars that have problems in the throttle linkage
(especially high mileage cars) the wrong things get tight and the
other wrong things get loose! I find that even with the spring the
throttle plates aren't always closing consistantly against the
throttle stop when the quadrant link is worn. The main point to my
last post is that any play or looseness can be the cause of the
throttle not hitting the micro switch and starting up the idle motor
system. Before getting deep into a complicated electical system make
sure it is not some simple mechanical problem in the first place! If
the throttle cable itself is tight then that could prevent the
throttle from retuning all the way to idle. I have also seen where the
accelerator pedal bracket has bent because the cable is tight. When
the pedal bracket bends you cannot open the throttle all the way. A
simple check: have an assistant hold the pedal all the way down while
you watch the throttle spool, it should just trip the Wide Open
Throttle switch without smacking it.

We are all driving glorified prototypes. Can use many adjectives to
describe the car, but "mature product line" isn't one of them. Some
issues were never resolved. Spare tire is just one of them.

14" wheels fit spare tire well no sweat. Problem is 15" rears. Have
heard 3 transportation options:
-Tie to luggage rack, if equipped
-Place on engine cover and tie down louvers
-Put in passenger seat

Trunk itself poses own issues. Pack lightly. Plenty of space side to
side, but not tall enough for standard bags.

Are fun little cars, steeped in history. Is surprisingly easy to
obtain your own copy. Maintenance not too difficult (problem is tight
access, not engineering, and cost of parts). Every once in a while rue
the day I brought one home, but generally recommend ownership.

I did it - I can tell you all about it if you want to hear. I can tell
you about how I spent 4 hours hugging my transmission only to get
nowhere and then the next day get the part out in under 20. I did the
master, slave, and braided clutch line all in 1 shot. contact me off
list for help. Maybe between the 2 of us we can make a howto

Subject: Question everyone.

Ok everyone new question,

I spoke to the owner of the DeLorean that I have began making downpayments to that I'm getting in November.  He told me there is one problem with the car - not a fatal one - but one that I decided to bring to everyone here for their suggestion as to what the problem may be.

Problem:

Start the car first time - runs for 40 seconds or so - then it dies.

Start the car a second time - runs for 1 minute or so - then it dies.

Start the car a third time - and it runs from there on.  No sudden death.

Question:  What are the possible causes of this?  To me, it doesn't sound too bad and it sounds like something that could be fixed without too much of a hassle.  If anyone has any ideas, I more than welcome any suggestions/responses/ideas.  Thanks everyone!

Hi Steve,

The electrical system is often the weakest link of all the components
in a car, or so I've been told by several mechanics, and I believe
it's true.  Especially in a 20+ year old car like a Delorean.
Corroded/oxidized switches, connections and bad grounds can cause all
sorts of problems.

If your RH window does not work but the LH one does, then swap the
switches. If your pass. side now works and the driver's does not, then
you know that the switch is the problem.  I had that problem and the
cause was a bent and corroded contact inside the switch. They are easy
to take apart and clean, but just be careful with those two tiny
springs inside because they're hard to find if you drop them on the
floor.

As for the reverse lights, look under the car and see if you can find
a connector on the side of the transmission. (Driver's side, I think).
You probably will have to jack up the car to see it.  There should be
a wire connected to it  Unplug it and clean the connection.  If that
doesn't fix it then try removing the tail-light circuit boards and do
the "bolt-through-the-rivet-hole" trick.  (e-mail me if you don't know
how, or ask the list) Another thing is the bulbs themselves.
Twenty-year old ones may look ok, but actually may have gone bad.

Unfortunately, the Delorean is notorious for electrical problems, but
there are updates available from the vendors to fix them.  If your car
still has the original relays then  get the relay kit from one of the
vendors.  Replace all the blade fuses, because they too can go bad
even if they look ok.

That's all I can suggest for now.  Hope this helps
