While maintaining the DMCNews classifieds, I have noticed that some cars
seem to be priced fairly low.  Cars that are well taken care of are still
going for upwards of $16K, but there does seem to be many cars available
for
less (undoubtedly needing varying degrees of restoration).  I'm sure a
contributing factor is that, thanks to the Internet, sellers are able to
make their cars available to a wider audience, and buyers have more to
choose from.  If you add the wide price range ($5K-$40K) to the mix, it
could easily generate a mentality of "I'll wait for a better deal",
instead
of "I can't believe I found one, I better get it!" ...

Buyers Beware:  You get what you pay for, but a higher price doesn't
always
mean a good car. Unless you're planning on shelling out all sorts of cash
to
restore a D, heres a couple tips:

* Never buy a DeLorean from a dealership (unless it's consigned by an
owner
that you can talk to)
* Never buy a DeLorean from an owner that has only had it a short period
of
time, doesn't know the history of the vehicle, doesn't care about
DeLoreans
in general, or can't tell you anything about [insert various DeLorean
problems here].

I speak from experience folks, I purchased My D for $16K from a used car
dealer, and have spent over $4000 on repairs in less than 6 months of use
(and over 6 months of it sitting dormant in my garage).

No damage other then a slightly dented facia, and even that isn't too bad.
I never had a chance to brake, so I was actually going 15mph or so when I
hit.  I was pretty impressed with how well it held up.

Subject: DML: When will these automatic tranny problems stop?

OK, I know you'all are tired of hearing me gripe and moan about my
automatic
transmission, but I'm at my whit's end.  6 months after I had my tranny
rebuilt (a third time in it's life), I'm getting some of the same
problems I
had before.  When I accelerate quickly from a stop or driving slowly
(still
in 1st gear), the tranny will go out of gear for a second.  This never
happens in 2nd or 3rd.  I'm guessing this has to do with my transmission
computer (again).  I don't want to buy a 3rd transmission computer if it's
just going to die 6 months down the line.  The last one I replaced only
lasted 1 month.  Is there anything I can do?

I'd love to get a little more detail on the LED diagnostic tool that has
been mentioned before, so I can see if it's the computer that is pooching
me, or if it's a mechanical problem.

I have a dead tranny computer left over from the last time I replaced it.
Can anyone repair/rebuild/improve it?

I'm desperate, anything will help!

Subject: DML: No Start due to fuel filter

Hello

Your input TO MY NO START  problem was remarkable. However here is a more
detailed description.
I replaced the fuel filter as you all well know. Now the car will not
start.

I had the orig. DMC RPM relay replaced about 2 weeks ago w/ a Volvo unit
from the Specialists here in Baltimore. Checked it out with a DMC supplier
and they said that the Volvo RPM unit is fine.

I slipped off the cover to the new Volvo RPM relay and I pressed on the
points to see if the fuel pump was working.

The coil in the engine area and the fuel pump both hum and make noise.  I
then took the fuel pump out and I cranked the car, and the pump worked as
well.

I'm getting gas to the injectors and the cold start valve.  I'm now
starting to think that it is something electrical.

It starts for about 30 seconds and then quits. I try to restart (5 hours)
and it sounds like it wants to start but it just coughs, stutters,
stammers and sputters.
What a Lemon, :)' as my girlfried Laura says.

I just received the latest DeLorean World and there is an article about
the dieods behind the drivers seat.  This is where the oxygen sensor plugs
in to the computer. (Thick Blue wire in this area).
1. The oxygen sensor was disconnected and I plugged it back in WHEN I
REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER.

2. Started it and it ran fine for 5 minutes. shut it off, put the Trailing
arm sheild back on and the tire.

3. Then, the car would not restart. It just "ACTS" like it wants to start.
(who the hell am i trying to convince here, me or you... :)

Could the dieod that runs the idle speed circut have fried itself?
Would this have anything to do with it quitting after initial startup?

Again I'm getting gas from the fuel filter to the fuel dist. then to the
injectors.

I am so thankful that I can ask you all these confusing
questions and get logical answers.  You all are very important to me.

As always all of you are in my thoughts during the Holidays!!!  :)

Sincerely,
 Michael Pack

The only conclusion you might draw from the data in Hemmings is that
asking prices on a sample of DeLoreans (those in Hemmings) are lower
than they once were.

I think you would be interested in Knut Grimsrud's statistacal analysis
of DeLorean selling prices, which was published in the DeLorean Club of
Oregon newsletter, I believe in mid 1997.  You can download DeCO
newsletters for free as PDF files from the internet; follow the links to
"Local Clubs" and "DeLorean Club of Oregon" from the dmcnews.com
website.

One of Knut's observations was that, at the time, selling prices seemed
considerably lower than asking prices.  It is possible that today the
asking prices listed in Hemmings have simply adjusted to be more in line
with the actual selling prices.  In fact, selling prices may have even
*increased* while asking prices have decreased.  Without more
information you cannot tell for sure.

Read Knut's analysis and see what you think.

Subject: DML: Announcing DeLorean Book Discussions

Has anyone else noticed that JZD criticizes himself at odd moments in his
own book?  Or that Stainless Steel Illusion makes a number of technical
errors?  Or that Fallon and Srodes sometimes attack society's
permissiveness even more than they attack JZD?

I have recently begun to read / re-read my collection of DeLorean related
books and I would like to discuss them with others.  Rather than tie up
the DML with hundreds of pages of literary criticism that won't appeal to
most of you, James Espey has graciously set up a BBS at the DMCNews
website dedicated to discussing these books.

Please check out the DeLorean book discussion BBS.  It is located at:

http://dmcnews.com/bbs/index.sht

As the discussions continue I will occasionally post update message to
the whole DML.

I have already started the first thread there.  Personally, I plan to
discuss
the books as I read them, beginning with JZD's own book "DeLorean"
which I just completed.  It will probably take a year to finish discussing
them all.  Feel free to start other threads if you want to begin reading
any
of the books at any time.  Also feel free to jump into any discussion at
any time.

The titles on my list are: DeLorean, Dream Maker, On a Clear Day You
Can See General Motors, The Stainless Steel Illusion, The DeLorean
Tapes, Grand Delusions: The Cosmic Career of John DeLorean, Hard
Driving: My Years with John DeLorean, and The DeLorean Gold Portfolio.
Please feel free to suggest others.

Except for Stainless Steel Illusion, these books are available for
purchase from sources like the DMCNews website, the DOA website,
and the Amazon.com website.  You can probably find some of the
books, even SSI, in local libraries.

Book discussions are more fun if several of us are all reading together,
so I will give you time to obtain your books and start reading.  As such,
 I
will just post an introduction and we can have general comments for the
first week.

We will begin with Chapter 1 of "DeLorean" by John Z. DeLorean and
Ted Schwarz, on Monday, December 14.  I will post a reminder message
to the DML at that time.

I'm torn on this subject. Many of you know that I had the pleasure of
spending an afternoon at JZD's home in Bedminster over the summer. I got
the distinct impression that it wasn't the happiest memory of his life,
even it was an epiphany of sorts for him.

He's quite aware of the DML, the DOA and many of the regional groups. He
has the opportunity to be the Zora Arkus-Duntov or Carroll Shelby of the
DeLorean community, but for one reason or another he doesn't want it. If
any good came out of DeLorean Motor Company for him, I think the
adulation of the owners is it. And if JZD does not want to take part in
that, then we should just be happy that we have what we do - an amazing
car.

I'll be sending him a card, but it won't be a DeLorean card.

I want first crack at those plates when u do give em up
I'll hold your car hostage at the next show if you don't (lol)

I have the vanity plate Gigawat now and it gets a lot of responses

Funny thing though the spelling of Gigawat

I have seen it in print relating to the movie as both Gigawatt and
jigowatt.
jigowatt is more predominant but it was also taken w/o the last t of
course
since we are limited to 7 letters.

By the way I just had a chance to review a tape sent to me by Ken
Mongomery of

finally
had a chance to look at the whole thing in its entirety.  He did a great

were

My thanks to u ken and I think u may get a lot of calls for your tape
Its good and I appreciated it thanks.

I don't have an automatic trans., but I would be happy to look at the
electronics to see if it can be repaired, or even improved.

I am told that the circuit is sealed in a epoxy "goo", and that makes it
difficult to work with, but I will give it a shot.

Contact me directly if you are interested.

The correct spelling is 'gigawatt'.  It is a scientific term meaning 1
billion watts, the amount of power used by roughly ten million light
bulbs.  So unless your computer is equipped with a 4 'Jigobyte'
hard disk, you should spell it properly. :)

It could be excusable for film-related material to call it "jigowatt"
because Marty does not know what the term means, so he probably also
doesn't know how to spell it.  On the other hand, more likely it simply
means that the person writing the material didn't know how to spell it
either. :)

Recently I picked up one of the BTTF models at my local hobbie shop. The
only problem was that I couldn't find a color to match the stainless
steel,
but I did find one. After spraying the body with Metalic Silver paint, I
brushed it with 0000 grade steel wool. Now when you shine light on it, it
will reflect just like real brushed stainless steel. So I was thinking,
has
anyone ever tried this with the facia panels? If your were to spray them,
and then brush them with steel wool to give them a "grain", so that way
they
would always stay the same color as the panels and not look painted.

You flatter me sir.. So where's my money for the photograph contest I
'won'??? Seriously, I think I flailed around way too much with the
camcorder. And it was so dark in the warehouse that the recorder
couldn't get a lock on the focus. At least I managed to fill a 2 hour
tape, which is a great way to bore all your non DMC friends to death.

After photographing several DeLorean events and videotaping Cincinnati
and the L.A. Expo, it really boils down to 'when you've seen one
DeLorean, you've seen them all'. My future focus will be to get angles
that have never been seen before (anyone willing to flip their car over
so we can get 'bottom' shots?). And to focus (pun intended) on the
owners and get more of their stories. And if I can ever get back to the
warehouse I'm taking a BIG flashlight!

As to copies, I am first and formost willing to TRADE. There were
several others at the Cincinnati show with camcorders and I've yet to
hear of any one else offering their copies. I'd also like to see videos
of other events (DeLorean related of course!).

The K&N air filter #33-2002 does NOT fit the Delorean correctly,
even
turned upside down.  I have 3 of them a friend of mine at K&N gave me to
try,
still in the boxes.  This filter is the correct width but it is about 1/2
inch
too short.  If you have installed it by centering it in the air box, you
have
unfiltered air coming in around both sides. The engine will still run
fine,
it's just some of the air going into it is not filtered. "Dirty"
unfiltered
air will eat up the insides of your engine very quickly. If you're going
to
run this filter I suggest you find a way to seal these gaps.
My "friend" at K&N works in the R&D department.  I have furnished him
with
a Delorean air box and he is currently working on developing a correct
filter
for our cars.  I'll keep the list posted as things progress.

Dave,

First off, check the 3 wires going from the engine compartment to the =
transmission governor to see if they might be  touching the engine or =
exhaust manifold.  This is usually a BIG problems with the auto trans =
governor.  After a few miles, the wires can end up touching the manifold =

1. Check the transmission fluid level (I'm sure that you already have =

2. Check the selector level adjustment
3. Problem in the valve body
4. Problem with Brake B2

Hope this helps,

Subject: DML: DeLorean on News!

Dear friends,

Please listen to my story.  I have firgured out a way to get the D =
onto a news program that will be seen by many students across the =
nation.  It is called channel one news.  Channel one is a network that =
is designed to teach students about news going on in the wold around =
them.  They play it in classrooms across the nation.

This upcoming March channel one will be doing something they call =
student week.  They will select several students from across the nation =
to fly in and do the show for one week.  Thats when the idea hit me.  =
Why don't I try out for the show and send in a report about the D?

It would be so cool to have information about the D being crammed =
into other young minds across the nation.  Don't you think?  If there =
are any other High School students out there I recomend you all to try =
out for a writers job and maybe one of us can get on and write a story =
about JZD and his car!

If anyone out there can help me in writing a story please email me.  =
I need all the help I can get.  If the show does hit the air, I will do =
my best to get copies of it for all the interested DML'ers out there.  =
If you need more info about the Student news week please point your =

If you can help me out I am at StephenR@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Howdy..  I read in a backissue about a conversion for the DeLorean's
headlights, using the lights from a 1985 Nissan...  Does anyone have the
specific model, and/or the prodecure for this modification?

Thanks!

Check out David Swindles post about the compatibly between the Purolater

sounds like the source of your NO START.

Richard,
If you own a DeLorean you have to expect to pay premium prices for a
premium car.
Call you local Lotus, Jaguar, or Ferrari dealer and ask them for a price
for a fuel sender for one of their cars, I think you'll find them very
costly. Concerning the Tankzilla from P.J. Grady, this is an excellent
unit, the tank sender is superior to the factory original and the ECU that
accompanies it makes the fuel gauge much more accurate and reliable than
the original. We have installed many of these units and recommend them
highly.

Alex,
At one time there were as at least three suppliers of spoilers, rear
wings,
and other ground effects. To the best of my knowledge they are all gone.
You may be able to find something that may work from J.C. Whitney in
Chicago. BTW I checked out that website
http://members.xoom.com/Gullwings/delorean.html and found several mistakes
that I thought should be corrected. A) Although some dealers had a waiting
list I don't know of any that had over 100. B) There were many more than a
handful painted by dealers and they were not all red. C) John DeLorean did
not fail at making a dependable performance car. D) There are a lot more
than "some" 81's around today.

tightly, I use a 1/4" ratchet to tighten.  I do not put the wires under
the
hose clamp.  There are grooves in the pump boot for the wires, I do not
use
them.  The boot will not tighten down enough with the wires between the
clamp and the boot, plus the clamp damages the wires.  I then fold the top
rubber/vinyl cover over the boot and clamp.  The cover seems to lay there
just fine.

Hi Marty,
If I may respectfully disagree, I was very careful to check the fit at the
bottom of my airbox and it fit as snugly as the stocker did right side
up.  I
was very skeptical and checked it several times to be sure that what you
described would not happen.  Could it be that there are two different air
boxes used on the car?  In any event, when K&N comes up with a proper
replacement, I will be one of the first to buy it, because even this
compromise is far superior to the stocker (seat of pants judgment only).
Keep
us informed, thanks Joe

I new the scientific root was giga that is why my plate reads gigawat.

Would it help if we started a list of the people who would buy one of
these
DeLorean K&N filters?  Maybe we could get a special run on them, just like
the ss brake lines.  Maybe it would show K&N that there are people out
there
that really do want a K&N for their DeLoreans.  Just a thought

p.s. if such a list gets created put my name on it! :-)

Subject: DML: slow idle when cold.

Dear DML,
Well, I tried to do what was suggested and here is what I got.
First,
the fuel freq valve buzzes, so I don't think that is a problem.  I
disconnected the idle motor and the car would pulse, on the low end of the
pulse it would go really really low, battery light would start to glow and
then back up.  When I reconnected the motor, it made a click noise (not
the
connector snaping) and made the idle rock solid 750 again.   This is only
happening lately.  In the nicer weather the car doesn't idle low ever.  It
pulses for a minute or less and then the idle becomes rock solid again.
Now, in the colder days... (car is still garage kept)  it is doing this.
When the car warms (say about 2-3 minutes)  I don't have any problems.  I
know I am being a perfectionist...  What do you guys think..
Jameel

I think the big issue is the fact that the K&N air filter has some "play",
whereas the correct filter doesnt.  Basically you have to keep the K&N
filter from moving around.  I accomplished this by suffing a couple 1/2"
pieces of styrofoam on either side of it.  I'd reccomend anyone else using
this filter to do something similar.
