Up until the 1960's most cars were fitted with an "oil bath" air filter.
New paper technologies created the paper filter which was disposable,
inexpensive, and easy to change. The claims of an increase in horsepower
due to a an improved filter design are exaggerated not to mention a price
five to six times higher than a paper counterpart. Buyer beware.

Chris,
The manual won't be of much help in locating the RPM relay. Go to the
electrical compartment on the left side of the parcel shelf and locate a
blue multi-pin connector towards the rear of the compartment. The small
black or green box attached to the blue connector is the RPM relay. This
unit decides when the fuel pump and emission computer are powered up. This
part has a 50% failure rate and is can cause the car not to start or run
poorly.

Steve,

Thanks for the info.  You are 100% correct.  I didn't mention it in
detail but
one should use silicone that is safe for the oxygen sensor.  If you must
use
any silicone of uncertainty, then the silicone should be given at less a
week
to two week's time to cure if the bead is not more then 1/4'' thick.  It
will
be safe then.

Subject: DML: A few observations/questions

Hi DMLer's,

My dad, my friend and I went in to Sydney to check out the DeLorean again,
and here's the latest lowdown on the car -

Firstly, I have some questions about the doors. On this particular car
(VIN#
10599), there is a "door-ajar" alarm which sounds when the key is in the
ignition and the passenger side-door is open (but not the Driver's door).
It's not like the alarms seen on more recent types of cars, which beep
until
you take the key out, it's more like a monotonous, high pitched tone that
drives you crazy! I'm pretty sure this thing didn't come standard on the
DeLorean when it rolled out of the factory, so does anyone have any ideas
on
how to disconnect the alarm?

Also, while on the subject of doors, the central locking mechanism seems
to
be a bit strange. When you unlock the car from the drivers-side door (that
would be on the right side, since it's an RHD car) both doors unlock
perfectly. But when locking the car from the drivers-side door, only that
door locks, and not the passenger door. Is this normal?

Another glitch on this particular car is that the brake lights seem to
work
intermittently. We spent about 15 minutes yesterday cleaning the contacts
for the bulbs. They seemed to work okay after that, but I think they may
need a thorough cleaning once we get the car home next Sunday.

One last problem. The hook that locks the engine cover has broken off - is
that a common problem on the car? I remember seeing these hooks in a
DeLorean One catalogue, so I guess we're gonna have to fix that pretty
soon.

On the subject of factory RHD's versus converted RHD's, my dad noticed
something interesting on the car which I thought I'd try and get some
opinions on. I believe that in the US (as well as Australia), the
indicator
toggle stick-thingy is on the right-side of the steering wheel, whereas in
England it's on the left side. Is this right? Well, on this car it's on
the
left, just like on a European car. Is this any indication (pardon the pun)
of whether #10599 is a factory RHD DeLorean?

Well, thanks for reading.

From: Matthew Peak <mpeak@xxxxxxxx>
Subject: DML: John DeLorean

Regarding the recent postings on John DeLorean, I believe that the
DeLorean
car is by no means John DeLorean's greatest accomplishment.  Many aspects
of the projects are extraordinary, such as the level of talent DeLorean
was
able to bring into the organization.  Much of the hierarchy left high
paying jobs and pensions to go to work for DMC.  However, in the end, the
car itself didn't do much to change the industry.  Don't get me wrong, I
love my car and believe it to be one of the most stylish, charismatic,
fun,
and reliable cars I have ever seen or driven.  But had DeLorean succeeded
in building the originally conceived "ethical" car made of a patented,
new,
lightweight, stronger-than-steel material, that was a truly
high-performance sports car, obtained superb mileage, was safer than an
ordinary car, and came with standard airbags, it would have radically
revolutionized the auto industry.  Think about it...mileage in the late
1970's?  Airbags in the late 1970's?  These things were the furthest
things
from American automaker's minds.  Look at the cars they were producing.
Besides his unbelievable engineering and management talents, John
DeLorean
was a visionary and had ideas ahead of his time.  The idea for the
Pontiac
Fiero came from his team during the 1960's, 20 years before GM woke up
and
built the car.  It is during these years that I think John DeLorean's
greatest accomplishments came.  He turned around and virtually rebuilt
two
divisions in the world's largest automaker, setting sales records that I
believe have yet to be broken.  On a current note, I believe the auto
industry is about to experience another revolution once Bill Ford takes
over Ford Motor Company next year.  Like DeLorean, Ford is a visionary.
He
anticipates the future and his ideas are right on target.  Look out, he's
going to be one to watch.

Last thoughts:
There are a million websites out there with DMC-12 car pictures.  Why has
nobody posted pictures of John DeLorean?  Nice, full sized, high
resolution
pictures would be nice desktop backgrounds.

Also, a fascinating perspective of the DMC experience is painted in the
book "Hard Driving: My Years With John DeLorean."  I couldn't put the
book
down and finished it in less than a week.  One interesting note: Haddad
mentions that DMC was working on a 4X4 car and had produced a prototype
titled the "DMC-44."  I have yet to hear discussions about this car and
was
wondering if anybody knows about it.  Was Haddad being literal when he
said
that a prototype had been created?

Exagerated? K&N never claimed a huge hp improvement. Dyno test have shown
improvents between 0 and 10 hp.

3 or 4 times, and it's reusable, so after 30 k miles you've made your

This is not normal behavior, but it is pretty typical. The passenger-side
solenoid is most likely fried, but you could just need a new switch on the
driver's side.  You'll probably want to get Lockzilla from PJ Grady and
you
may have to have him rebuild your passenger's solenoid as well.

Again, pretty typical.. The tail light circuit board is junk.. Some folks
have had some success with using little machine bolts to secure the
connections, but that didn't work for me, so I pulled the old lights out
and
made some custom jobbers using standard fixtures I found at Walmart.  That
may not be for everyone, so if you really want to 'em to work right, PJ
Grady also makes a better circuit board.. Rob's a god.

Good luck!

Subject: DML: Poster for sale

I have a DeLorean poster that I would like to see go to
a good home.

It's 20.25" x 16" and shows a DeLorean with a flat hood
(no creases, no emblem) in a front 3/4 view against a
blue background.  The car has a gray interior and the
driver's door is open.  The mirror on that door is
folded back.

You'll notice that the negative used to print the poster
was reversed, because the steering wheel is on the wrong
side and the windshield wipers are pointing the wrong
way.

I've had the poster for a little over a year -- it is
not dusty nor faded, but there are a few carefully-made
staple holes along the top and bottom edges of the
poster.  It also has a little scuffing along the left
edge, which was there when the poster was shipped to me.

I am asking $5 (five dollars) for the poster, and I will
pay shipping.  I will send the poster rolled in a tube.
I like the poster very much, but am trying to de-clutter
my room and want another DeLorean-lover to enjoy it as
much as I have.

Please e-mail me your address; I will send the poster to
the earliest respondent.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

Dan,
Thanks for the additional information, I may have been misled by a post
from another list member who wrote:  "It's an oil-soaked cotton filter."
and "they get as much as a 15 hp gain" They also said "The trouble is if
you use the car daily, you must have two filters on hand.  You will have
to
rotate the filter as one being in the car while the dirty one is being
cleaned and prepared for the next to be used."

They also said; "There reusable by washing and re-oiling it".
Based on this information, which was shared by other list members, I was
led to believe that this may not be worth the extra work and expense
compared to tossing out the old filter and putting in a fresh clean one
for
$6 to $8. So you may be right!

BTW Check out Kayo Ong post also on Dec 15 about his home made air filter
that he fabricated from air conditioner filters and nylon stockings.
Sounds
like a very cost effective project.

D.J.
Be aware that doors were assembled on a separate assembly line. Many
doors were exchanged at the factory and the QAC centers in N.J. and CA.
Therefore Vin numbers in doors may not match the vehicles there installed
in.
You'll find the magic marker notes behind the door headliner. They
indicate
assembly completion dates and initials of the person who completed the
procedure.

There is no "door-ajar" alarm on factory DeLoreans only a dash mounted
warning light. The sound you hear is the "key " buzzer which is a reminder
for the driver to remove the key before leaving the car. It is easily
disconnected. It sounds as if your RHD key buzzer is wired for the
standard
USA LHD.

The door lock condition means that the passenger door lock solenoid is
defective.

The intermittent brake light problem is common to the factory lamp circuit
board, This condition is also easily corrected by purchasing a high
quality
after market replacement available from most DeLorean parts suppliers.

The hood latch is somewhat flimsy but is easily replaced.

And finally, all of the DeLorean directional levers are mounted to the
left
of the steering wheel. Hope we have answered all of you questions.

It is, sort of. It is several layers of a cotton gauze between 2 metal
screens. It's not really soaked in oil, you spray a light mist on when you
clean it.

> and "they get as much as a 15 hp gain"

Not for a 130 HP engine.... Maybe on a big block V-8 with other mods,
using a K&N will give you that kind of increase tho.

Nah, you clean it every 20-30000 miles or so...

Yep.

Eh, takes 10 minutes or so.

I don't have a DMC yet, but I use a K&N in my VW Scirocco. I could
definitely feel a performance increase, not so much in added power, but
the throttle response seems much quicker. I'd attribute this to the fact
that the airflow meter responds quicker when there isn't as much of a
pressure drop accross the filter to buffer the affect of the pressure
change as the throttle is opened. Since the DMC also uses the same
K-Jetronic injection system, I'd expect similar results.

Some time ago, I read about a DeLorean with trailer hitch on it, though
now I do not remember where. Any info on this mod would be appreciated.

On that subject, I found a great and permanent solution. I don't know if =
it has been mentioned before, but all I did was solder the connections =
on the board where the original rivets are that hold the bulb fixtures =
in. A regular soldering gun works wonders on those old boards. Mine work =
perfectly now. No flaws. I was pretty generous about filling up those =
holes while soldering them to the board too. Good luck! ---Dan Vin# 5493

James,
You are probably thinking about a story and picture in DeLorean World # 25
Sept. 1990. On the cover is a picture of a DeLorean pulling a small
trailer
that looks like the front half of a DeLorean. The story talks about the
custom built trailer but nothing about how the hitch is attached to the
towing "D".

Hello Everyone

The  car jack that came with the DeLorean  snapped in half while I was
coming out from underneath yesterday.  Look at the condition of the Jack
in the Bonnett, mine looked perfectt, but you never know.  I'm so thankful
that  the  telephone rang..

Seasons Greetings

In addition
I would like to have  "HARD COPY"" issues of the DMC NEWS magazines. I
believe that there are  3 issues to date. Could any one assist me with
this request?

Check DeLorean World Volume 7, Number 2 issue. It has a DeLorean trailer
custom made by Lane and Darlene Hoggson in Washington. The article doesn't
say where he got the hitch though.

James, I think your friend Ed B. had a trailer hitch on his car. It was
the
"slider" type.  Stephen Wynne indicated to me a couple of years ago that
there was just such a slider unit made for the D.  I have never seen one
other than the one on Ed's car.

Michael,

You are in fact a very lucky person.  The one thing that you
should have learned from this is that you should NEVER use
the car jack alone when you are doing anything other than
changing a tire.  ALWAYS use jack stands if you are going to
be under the vehicle!

Glad you'r still here.

That is certainly something I want to add. Unfortunately it would mean
going
to see Simon's car with my camera to get the best pictures (you may have
noticed most of the shots are high-res). I don't have easy access to a
scanner and I don't know if Simon has any pictures of the mods. I'll ask
him.
