Hello again,

One more unusual comment I forgot.  I was showing someone the car and they
asked me in a very knowledgeable tone, "has your rear window fallen out
yet?"

After telling him that this may have been an isolated incident he had
heard of
somewhere, this is not a usual problem with the car.  He insisted that I
should
watch out while driving, and warned me that my window would eventually
fall.

Once again I must ask, what does it take to convince people these days?

Subject: DML: Common Problem???

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some helpful hints on this problem:

Having problems with driver side taillight- will be ordering new
circuit board from PJGrady's soon. The brake lights currently do not
work (driver side only). Difinitly not just burned out lights-
already tried swapping bulbs around. Here's the odd thing though and
I don't remember this happening last fall- right hand turn signal
works fine (interior indicator and both front and back lights) but a
funny thing happens when I hit the left turn signal. Both the
interior indicator and front light work fine but blink VERY fast (on
the order of twice as fast as the normal passenger side indicators).
The tail light turn signal light does not work at all.

Questions:
Anyone every experience this oddity before?
Is it linked to the faulty tail light (guesses anyone?)
Could I have caused this by swapping bulbs around to test the brake
lights?

Any other suggestions would be helpful. Also as far as replacing the
circuit boards for the tail lights- anyone done it? I'm assuming it's
pretty easy?

I apologize for using people's time if this is in the archives- I
didn't check them first (sorry- usually do).

Sincerely,
Jeff Wiltzius

Time to get my story in before this gets cut off.

I would suggest that given most passer buys won't believe the truth, that
maybe "we" are going the wrong way with this.......

$100,000 bucks?  let me tell you..."you would not believe what this car
cost!" never tell any one your hot looking car is really cheep!

224MPH?...well let me put it this way, the last CHP motorcycle I past on
the highway, the cop thought his bike had stalled and got off to see what
was wrong doing 88MPH.

Yes it's a helicopter motor, but I am waiting for a new Viper V-10 at the

Actually there were only 12 cars made and 4 were ruined making that
movie.

Subject: DML: APRIL 3, 1999  MOBILE CAR SHOW - UPDATE #1

On April 3, 1999 we are having another car show in Mobile, Alabama.

Camellia Classic held at Bellingrath Gardens.

So far, we have a car coming from TN, Dallas Texas and possibly from
Northern Alabama.  Including myself, that is four cars.

I relieze that the entry form is difficult to read on my web page, so if
you
email me directly with a your name, fax/phone number I will fax a copy of
the form to you.

My web page has a link for Belligrath Gardens, which is fantastic.  If we
get enough entrants with DeLoreans, we should be able to get our own class
at the show.  This is a large car show and we set up in the middle of the
gardens in a grassy field.  The entry fee is $20, before the show, which
includes two admissions to the gardens, free tee shirt to the first 100
entrants.  Last year, I registered in class #9, 1980-1996 production.
Call
334.666.3761 for more info and lobby for our own class.

There are lots of Motels in Tillmans Corner which are reasonably priced.
Downtown Mobile has a couple of classier hotels near the water front.  Two
of the entrants are planning to stay in Gulf Shores.  Gulf Shores has some
of the nicest beaches in the world and lots of hotels, ect...
Nearby, is Pensacola FL, home of the Blue Angels and the Navy air museum.
The Air Museum  is better than the Smithsonium's Air and Space museum.
This
is my opinion anyway.

The weather in April is usualy pretty nice.  I will bring an umbrella for
shade.

email me directly if you need further info.  Also, remember to look at my
future events section for show info.  The link is below.

Subject: DML: Brake Fluid

Here is a post from the BMW group that should answer a lot of questions
about brake fluids.

>>>>>>

Brake Fluid Facts
by Steve Wall

As a former materials engineering supervisor at a major automotive brake
system supplier, I feel both qualified and obligated to inject some
material
science facts into the murky debate about DOT 5 verses DOT 3-4 brake
fluids.
The important technical issues governing the use of a particular
specification brake fluid are as follows:

Fluid compatibility with the brake system rubber, plastic and metal
components.
Water absorption and corrosion.
Fluid boiling point and other physical characteristics.
Brake system contamination and sludging.
Additionally, some technical comments will be made about the new brake
fluid
formulations appearing on the scene.

First of all, it's important to understand the chemical nature of brake
fluid. DOT 3 brake fluids are mixtures of glycols and glycol ethers. DOT 4
contains borate esters in addition to what is contained in DOT 3. These
brake fluids are somewhat similar to automotive anti-freeze (ethylene
glycol) and are not, as Dr. Curve implies, a petroleum fluid. DOT 5 is
silicone chemistry.

Fluid Compatibility
Brake system materials must be compatible with the system fluid.
Compatibility is determined by chemistry, and no amount of advertising,
wishful thinking or rationalizing can change the science of chemical
compatibility. Both DOT 3-4 and DOT 5 fluids are compatible with most
brake
system materials except in the case some silicone rubber external
components
such as caliper piston boots, which are attacked by silicon fluids and
greases.

Water absorption and corrosion
The big bugaboo with DOT 3-4 fluids always cited by silicone fluid
advocates
is water absorption. DOT 3-4 glycol based fluids, just like ethylene
glycol
antifreezes, are readily miscible with water. Long term brake system water
content tends to reach a maximum of about 3%, which is readily handled by
the corrosion inhibitors in the brake fluid formulation. Since the
inhibitors are gradually depleted as they do their job, glycol brake
fluid,
just like anti-freeze, needs to be changed periodically. Follow BMW's
recommendations. DOT 5 fluids, not being water miscible, must rely on the
silicone (with some corrosion inhibitors) as a barrier film to control
corrosion. Water is not absorbed by silicone as in the case of DOT 3-4
fluids, and will remain as a separate globule sinking to the lowest point
in
the brake system, since it is more dense.

Fluid boiling point
DOT 4 glycol based fluid has a higher boiling point (446F) than DOT 3
(401F), and both fluids will exhibit a reduced boiling point as water
content increases. DOT 5 in its pure state offers a higher boiling point
(500F) however if water got into the system, and a big globule found its
way
into a caliper, the water would start to boil at 212F causing a vapor lock
condition [possible brake failure -ed.]. By contrast, DOT 3 fluid with 3%
water content would still exhibit a boiling point of 300F. Silicone fluids
also exhibit a 3 times greater propensity to dissolve air and other gasses
which can lead to a "spongy pedal" and reduced braking at high altitudes.

DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids are mutually compatible, the major disadvantage of
such a mix being a lowered boiling point. In an emergency, it'll do.
Silicone fluid will not mix, but will float on top. >From a lubricity
standpoint, neither fluids are outstanding, though silicones will exhibit
a
more stable viscosity index in extreme temperatures, which is why the US
Army likes silicone fluids. Since few of us ride at temperatures very much
below freezing, let alone at 40 below zero, silicone's low temperature
advantage won't be apparent. Neither fluids will reduce stopping
distances.

With the advent of ABS systems, the limitations of existing brake fluids
have been recognized and the brake fluid manufacturers have been working
on
formulations with enhanced properties. However, the chosen direction has
not
been silicone. The only major user of silicone is the US Army. It has
recently asked the SAE about a procedure for converting from silicon back
to
DOT 3-4. If they ever decide to switch, silicone brake fluid will go the
way
of leaded gas.

Brake system contamination
The single most common brake system failure caused by a contaminant is
swelling of the rubber components (piston seals etc.) due to the
introduction of petroleum based products (motor oil, power steering fluid,
mineral oil etc.) A small amount is enough to do major damage. Flushing
with
mineral spirits is enough to cause a complete system failure in a short
time. I suspect this is what has happened when some BMW owners changed to
DOT 5 (and then assumed that silicone caused the problem). Flushing with
alcohol also causes problems. BMW brake systems should be flushed only
with
DOT 3 or 4.

If silicone is introduced into an older brake system, the silicone will
latch unto the sludge generated by gradual component deterioration and
create a gelatin like goop which will attract more crud and eventually
plug
up metering orifices or cause pistons to stick. If you have already
changed
to DOT 5, don't compound your initial mistake and change back. Silicone is
very tenacious stuff and you will never get it all out of your system.
Just
change the fluid regularly. For those who race using silicone fluid, I
recommend that you crack the bleed screws before each racing session to
insure that there is no water in the calipers.

New developments
Since DOT 4 fluids were developed, it was recognized that borate ester
based
fluids offered the potential for boiling points beyond the 446F
requirement,
thus came the Super DOT 4 fluids - some covered by the DOT 5.1 designation
- -
which exhibit a minimum dry boiling point of 500F (same as silicone, but
different chemistry).

Additionally, a new fluid type based on silicon ester chemistry (not the
same as silicon) has been developed that exhibits a minimum dry boiling
point of 590F. It is miscible with DOT 3-4 fluids but has yet to see
commercial usage.

The bad thing is that some owners perpetuate the misconceptions.  Although
it may not cause much harm in some circumstances, speading false info.
does
not seem right.  I remember when I was getting ready to purchase my D, I
ran
into a guy/kid driving one in a parking lot.  I talked to him a bit and it
had to be obvious that I knew some about Ds (not that I was someone who
had
never seen one before).  After discussing the cars I had been considering,
in the range of 13k to 19k, I casually asked what he paid for his.  I was
told $70,000.  The car was in good shape with 13k miles on it, but needed
new door struts, headliners, etc.(and by the way, it was not gold!)  If
this
was true, I sure feel good about the price I bought mine for!

Nobody ever made a scale model of a D...yet.  The only ones any one can
find are the BTTF from hjl.com. they also offer a BTTF that is a plated
silver, and resembles the stainless steel really nice....but it is still
a BTTF, so that doesn't help.  If you are any good with models, you could
modify one of these kits like I am trying to do now. My only problem is
that I don't own a D yet, and every pic I see does not have a good clear
shot as to what the rear window area looks like from the inside or the
rear inside hatch.  The BTTF kits don't have the rear glass or deck at
all, so I have to build it from scratch.  I have the body finished other
than that.  If someone out there could assist me with a pic of this
area....It would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has a shot like this,
could you please e-mail it to me? thank you!!!

Hi yall,

the Wankel sounds like the expensive route. I'm presently converting my D.
I picked a Buick v6 model T out of a Grand National.
It puts out about 250 and with very minor changes can easily fetch 350hp.
I got lower front springs from PJ Grady.
I got rims from Simmons, 16x7 in front and 17x8 in back
I'm putting 205/45/16 in front and 255/45/17 in back.
on the not performance side of things I got the headliner redone.
I'd like to change the two lights to one long light in front. I've seen
doctored pictures that smudge the to lights together and it looks good.
Don't know if anything is available.
If anybody is interested I can post the progress, As of this morning, the
PVR is out.

With all the recent talk about synthetic lubricants, I thought I would
share
a recent discovery, but first the problem that was solved:

I have a 5-speed.  When it is cold outside, it becomes very difficult to
shift (especially into first or second gears).  I know that this is normal
for any car, but it seemed particularly bad on my De Lorean.  It took at
least two or three miles before I could shift normally in the cold and if
I
became impatient and tried to shift into second, many times the gears
would
grind!  I used to take a spin around the parking garage just so I wouldn't
have to shift out of first!

After a recommendation by fellow DML'er Kayo Ong (thanks again Kayo!), I
replaced my transmission oil and used what he said fixed his problem:
Redline MTL synthetic oil.  The result: my car now shifts perfectly, even
in
the bitter cold!  This oil is more expensive than standard gear oil, but
it
was certainly worth the extra bucks to me.  I am enjoying NOT taking any
more "warm-up" laps around the garage :)

Jeff,
I'm sure the answers will pour in on this one, but the front bulb is
blinking twice as fast as an indicator to you that you have a bulb out
(or circuit board out) on that side of the car.  On a regular car, I'd
suggest investing in a new bulb for your rear blinker, but with the
DeLorean, it is almost certain that it is a bad connection on the circuit
board itself, or between the circuit board and the power line connector
coming into it.  This was the case with mine, and I fixed it by wedging a
piece of metal in between the appropriate connections at this point.  I
must stress that this is a temporary fix (and therefore not recommended)
only until I can afford a new circuit board.
        Hope that helps,
        Josh

The signal indicator is relying on the correct power draw to blink at the
correct speed.  When a light burns out or isn't working (circuit board
failure/bad wiring) you'll get the "psycho blinker" effect.  I don't know
how other cars are set up, but I think the D's system is pretty flaky....

As long as the body is in good shape and the car runs good enough, that's
a
fair price.  Interior parts aren't too hard to find or horribly expensive.
Heck, a $30 dash mat, a couple seat covers and a roll of automotive carpet
could have your car looking like new if it's just some interior damage.
If
it's major electrical work or engine trouble, you could be looking at a
lot
of time and money and you'd probably be better off waiting to buy
something
a little more managable.

Hi Darrell,

My two cents worth, don't do it.  You'll put far more money into the car
just
to get it running with an interior than it's worth.  For a little more
money
($1,500 to $2,500) you can buy a DeLorean that is in running condition
and go
from there.

Good luck

You should have checked the back issues, Jeff.  Five minutes of
searching would have gotten your answer a whole day faster.

Your DeLorean is probably low on blinker fluid.  Too many of us neglect
our blinker fluid until it's too late.  Lucky for you I have an extra
quart I can sell you for just $15. :-)

Seriously, rapid blinking is a normal and intentional symptom of an open
circuit in one of the exterior lights.  This is supposed to tell the
driver when one of his / her bulbs is burned out, but in DeLoreans it
usually tells us that our rear circuit boards are not making good
contact.  In the back issues, you can find instructions for a permanant
repair that costs less than $5.  Search for "lights" and "Radio Shack,"
or just read this issue for a quick synopsis:

http://www.dmcnews.com/backissues/dml125.html

This solved the problem with my tail lights, turn signals, and brake
lights instantly.

Darrell,

It can be done, I bought a DMC that had been in a junk yard since '84.

Look thru the archives to get all the details.  Search for RECOVERED.

VIN = RECOVERED

Did the fire damage the electrical system and dashboard mechanisms?
What about the engine, fuel tank, and all the internal workings of the
center console?  Don't buy a car like this without checking thigs out
very carefully.

IMO this car is overpriced, *unless* (A) the fire damage is strictly
cosmetic and (B) your goal is to create a custom interior (like Curtiss
Bryant's car we saw in Cincinnati).  Many websites feature pictures of
this car.  Here are two:

Sean Mullally:
http://www.msu.edu/~mullally/dmc/cincinnati/

Ken Montgomery:
http://www.jps.net/arkham/delorean01.htm

If the damage is not too bad, the fire car might be perfect for such a
project.  Original interior parts are available, but they are not
cheap.  If you want an "original" DeLorean I suggest you pass on any car
damaged in a fire.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Time Inc.'s launch of People magazine in 1974 was a
radical departure for the serious-minded publisher, yet the weekly

In response to the fire damaged delorean, first off,and most likely the
fire
was caused by an electrical short, which means that you have a major
rewire/replace of the wiring harness,If you have seen a delorean wiring
harness, you would know it is typical British, and poorly designed, and a
nightmare to replace, and also if the fiberglass body got burnt, then you
should
go back to that school and learn how to repair fiberglass, also if the
seats
burnt, you are talking at least $1500.00 to repair/replace,
also as far as I know the center council is not available,so make sure
that
was not burnt, bottom line that burnt bird is way overpriced. Not to put
Deloreans down, but unless you know what you are doing, a car in that
condition
is best left for someone
who knows deloreans inside and out, such as Mr.Grady,or used to restore
another
delorean.

dear dmler's
I have the same problem.  When it is cold out, it takes me a few miles
before the shifting becomes easy on cold days.  I will be changing ot the
redline synthetic tomorrow, but I had another question.  The owner's
manuel
says not to let the car warm up.  I found that if I let it warms up a
little,
I don't see the trouble with the gears.  Is it bad to let the car sit
idle for
a few minutes to let it warm up?
