hmmm...now that you bring that up...

I have Lockzilla installed in my D (no remotes) and I noticed that
after I fully charge my battery with a battery charger....let it sit
for a week or two (without starting) then find out later when I go
to start it the battery would be dead or too weak to turn the engine
over. I thought that maybe the battery was a defective one and I
would just replace it later after I finished restoring my car. I
think I'll disconnect lockzilla and fully charge my battery
again...wait a week or two and see if the problem goes away.

Hi Hank, and All.

I've been taking a active behind the scene interest in Hank's project
here.  He's been wanting to design a battery backup for his car
radio, which was losing presets due to a current drain.  I've been
helping him design the battery backup circuit, cause I can't help
myself, all the while pestering him incessantly to find the leak
instead, because that sort of thing makes me nervous.  Now that he's
found the leak, determined it's only 30 milliamperes, and more
importantly determined that the leak is not the result of some fault
in the wiring somewhere, the next step is clearer.  I don't know
whether the 30 milliampere drain from the Lockzilla module is from
some kind of problem, because I don't have one, so you'll have to
take someone elses word on that.  It may be fine, or not.  But 30
milliamperes is a very small current, compared to the reserve
capacity of a car battery.  It should not drain the battery in a
week, it should take several months.  This immediately suggests a
weak battery.  I hopped on Sears website to find out the reserve
capacity of the Security Diehard battery in your car.  It wasn't
there.  I called our local Sears automotive and was told that this
battery has been discontinued, because of problems (maybe this exact
problem, he didn't say), and that you could take it back to the Sears
you got it from for an exchange.

Hopefully replacing the battery will fix everything.  Hank's car
radio will keep its presets, he can sleep better knowing there's no
mysterious failure in his car, and the doubt about Lockzilla can be
removed by someone without a stake in it. (Unless I'm wrong, of
course :-)

$79. You might want to give it a try, I will tonite.

Check out the chrome stock wheels on my car - top photo at  www.delorean-parts.com .  They have been on it for 7 or 8 years now with no problems whatsoever, and are totally maintenance free.  Cost as I recall was around $130 per wheel, but the place that did them won't do any more.  Most large chrome shops can do them.

How would we like this to be marketed and/or distributed?  Free?  Handouts?
Purchased on the net?  Just curious, because for the past several weeks I
have been toying with the idea of creating a short promotional video on the
car to the song "Where the streets have no name" from U2.  It would be
geared to an audience unfamiliar with the car and its current supporters and
organizations in this day in age.  Kind of a ballsy and forward "We're gonna
change your mind and view of this" sort of thing.  It would include video
segments and stills from, but not limited to DMCH, PJ Grady, DeLorean Motor
Center, D1, Zillas place, Special T Auto, the DML, footage of the car being
driven, being starred at when fuelling, interviews with enthusiasts' and
every day Joe's perseptions, you get the idea.  Hearing about an interactive
CD made me think that this could be a great intro for what they are about to
learn.  However, there is a copy write issue with the music I had in mind.
If the disk is given away, can it be done?  What are the laws on something
like this?  I like it because of the long intro, the build up, upbeat tempo,
and overall length, but laws just might not make it possible.  And on a side
note, I lack the equipment currently to handle all this video and editing
(editing, now that's time consuming).  Would it be a while before we
accumulate all the hard info for the disk to begin with?  Send all comments
and thoughts to the
DML or me at mike@xxxxxxxxxx   This could be great!

The PRV engines we use in australia have a comp ratio of 8.65:1 and

it does depend alot on your gear ratio's though

hi,

i used to park my car (not the delorean, another one but this is not the
point) sometimes in a high grade driveway. the parkingbrake was weak and so
i used to carry a wooden wedge in my car and put it during parking under the
front wheel. it?s not the "good looking" method, but a safe one.

The PRV is a low compression engine. Doesn't take much of an incline to
rotate it in gear. Have you tightened your parking brake cables? Is really
easy (and mine were 9/16 English!). They do stretch with time.

list,

Ok I've seen the normal ol' DMC-12 rubstrips. And My car has reproduction wide dealer-option-style side stripes, and i've seen a version with a thinner side strip down by the rubstip. But two cars on ebay right now have another accent-stripe up by the buttom window line that seems to have something written below the (nonfunctional) side vents. Why have i never seen this!? I've had the car for 11 months and been an avid reader on the car, yet this the first time I've seen this. does anyone have some pics of this line up close and some nice-quality ones from a few angles they can email me. (or just reference your web site)

thanks!!!

and just for the record at this moment in time (well... when i was driving) only the speedo and defogger switch are not working!! (that's good)

Does anyone know if the wheels from a Lotus S1 Esprit will fit on the
DeLorean? I've seen pictures of D's with these both in SSI, and the
video documentary. Getting tires shouldn't be a problem, but making
sure that the wheels fit is the concern. If nessisary, I couls always
change tire size to compensate for wheels to keep the factory specs.

These wheels though are the ones that look the best. And they
specificly have front and rear shapes to match how the rear wheels
bow into the center just like the stock wheels.

Thanks in advance!

Subject: Re: Delorean Myths/DeLorean facts

I figured this thread would have been shut down by now or died off, but it
looks like there's still interest. I think that this thread started off
with a definate goal in mind. That goal is to educate the public of the
DeLorean FACTS - whenever a DeLorean is encountered. Now the trick is that
the public won't want to be educated and will do anything to avoid it. :)
They'd much rather say something clever about a flux capacitor, jigawatts,
or cocaine to show us how funny they are. So... how to best educate?

I think a CD or a video would be really fun to make and it would be a neat
thing to have. Perhaps even a friendly challenge between the different
DeLorean clubs to come up with the most entertaining, informative
giveaway. However, how many people on the street happen to have a computer
or a VCR with them? Keep in mind the goal is to educate the uninterested.
Therefore, I suggest the low-tech approach of good old fashioned paper. :)

Another thing to remember is that the average guy on the street only has a
mild (at best) interest in the DeLorean. Hitting him with even 1 full page
of facts might be too much. I think 3"x5" or 4"x6" inch, double sided
cards are the right way to go. It's small, easy to pocket, and you can
quickly and easily point out where it says "V6" or "Not in jail" or "your
flux capacitor joke wasn't funny", all without the aid of high-tech
equipment. :) Asking someone to take a CD and promise to go home and trust
us enough to put the CD into their computer to read up on DeLoreans is
quite a strech. Asking someone to watch a music video is also a strech.

To get things moving in the right direction, I'll whip up a few different
designs and run it by my NCDMC group, as well as the DML to gauge overall
interest in becoming a DML "Card Carrier", and to gather input on design
and content.

Dave, (Copy to DML):

I'd really appreciate if you addressed these issues directly to me before posting to the DML and confusing people.

1.  As I said before, I have a agreement with the hotel for our group and the rate will be honored.  I was told before hand that Marriott sold to Westin, and was assured there would be no problems.

2.  The 15 rooms I had held do not limit us to 15 rooms.  It simply guarantees that we will have 15 rooms available to us.  If we need more, they will give us more (if available).  However, the reduced price is only valid if you reserve BEFORE 9/30 (this coming Monday).

3.  Others have reported booking rooms at "the Princeton Marriott" for $79.  THIS IS NOT THE HOTEL WE ARE STAYING AT.  Your welcome to stay at this hotel, it is about 5 miles from the one we are reserved at.  201 Village Blvd.  I have checked on a number of reports of $79 rate, and they were all booked at the wrong hotel.  If you stay at the other hotel, you do not get breakfast which is included with our rate of $105.

I am not a expert at planning things like this, and was just trying to help Mike out.  If you (or anyone) would like to take over the duties of logistics for the event, your welcome to it.. Otherwise, please just show up and enjoy yourself.  Your efforts to "help" have been counter productive.

Thanks,
Marc

Subject: Radio Presets

This is in response to the recent Battery/Radio thread.

The Craig radio has an un-switched source for the pre-sets - Right?  I'm
not so sure about the ASI.

If you have a battery cut-off of any kind, you should be able to bypass
the cut-off with a small-gage, fused wire to the un-switched source feed
to the radio.  This would retain the pre-sets with negligible current
drain.  If you were to also leave the stock un-switched wire hooked up,
your new wire would try to back-feed the whole car, so the stock wire
would have to be removed from it's source (or a diode added).

Can anyone provide more details on this, like wire colors for the
un-switched source, and an easy location to get at the wire?  A lot of
people with battery cut-off switched could benefit.

As LockZilla has to monitor the switches on the doors, SOME currentdraw
should be allowed. Although I DO think 30mA is a bit much.
Better let Bob Zilla answer this one; he's the expert on his products...

> The total current draw from the battery when the car is off was 30Ma

Does this mean you have NO clock or radio installed? Those should draw
some power too for keeping time and keeping the stations.
Don't know how much, but the mechanical clock on my Escort draws 5mA,
a digital one like our cars have will probably be less with the display off.

> Has anyone else noticed a slight current drain with Lockzilla
> (with or without Remote), or could I have a defective unit?

I have LockZilla on my car, an alarmsystem and a stereo and NO battery
switch. I have had to leave my car sitting for as much as 5 weeks
without any problems due to drain, just ahd a bit of trouble when I had
a faulty doorswitch causing my alarm to trip several times a day,
draining the battery by blinking the indicators all around for 3 minutes
per alarm cycle...

As I said, the LockZilla will draw SOME current, but as I don't know
how much is allowed, I'd contact Bob Zilla directly.

If that's the case you're probalby right on suspecting the LockZilla...
on a 65Ah battery, 30ma (0.03A) would take in completely out in about
2166 hours, but yours shuts off at about 10V, so that would take 1/6th
of the time, being 361 hours or 15 days...

It looks like it's close to nothing, but when you do the math...

Hank,

You should call Rob Grady about this.  He should know the unit inside out.
Also, if it is defective, there should be no problem with getting a
replacement.

Hank, your battery might be duff

the batt I have in mine is a 55Ah. with a drain of 30mA, it will be completely flat in 76
days.... - that's more than two months!

I have an alarm/remote locking/remote starter on my car and it stays armed for weeks and
the car still starts fine

Best Wishes

Subject: DeLorean Commercial?

The thread about a DeLorean information video has brought an old idea back into my head.
Would anyone be interested in creating a DeLorean commercial?

The idea is to create a digital commercial to help people selling used DeLoreans market
their cars.  It would be pure propoganda, and so given away for free.  Anyone who had a
DeLorean listed for sale somewhere on the Internet could embed the commercial in their
advertisement.

I'm imagining a 30 second MPEG or Quicktime movie.  It would present DeLoreans as being
fun cars.  It would make no promises about the condition or performance of any particular
DeLorean, it would only show that the car is glamorous and exciting.

Can anyone think of a downside?

If he or she is any kind of car nut(like me)they would more than be
happy to take a cd-r and watch it,expecially since it would be a
freebie, combine the two(paper and cd-r) and you have  a item that
most people would add to their collection, also be aware that if a
property rights, is not included in the Cd-r,that it would (or could)
become a Ebay auction item.

Ken and List,

Not sure why we have not heard from Michael Babb on this topic,
but he created a Delorean specification sheet early last year.

Check under "Files" in the DML Vault.  Michael Babb has a simple
tri-fold Delorean information sheet under the folder "tri-fold".
It does not contain answers to the jail, drugs and BTTF questions,
but it does contain all of the basic Delorean specification info.

It's a good starting place to get an idea of how to custom make
your own info sheet, or just print it and use it as is for now.

Mike,
It doesn't matter if there is a curb or not if the wheels are
turned,it will hopelly prevent the car from rolling down into on
coming traffic or into your neighbors property, across the street,or
if the incline is going into your living area into your house.
Also remember when you park your Delorean on a incline overnight,(or
anytime)that MOST of your oil in the oil pan is AWAY from your pickup
tube/screen in your oil pan,so that when you start your car you MAY
possibly NOT HAVE any oil or low oil pressure/lube depending on the
incline of your driveway. My suggestion is to either put the car in
netural and roll it down to a level area and then start it,or if you
have the side area(s) by your driveway to park your Delorean
sideways, with the nose of the car towards the driveway. The nice thing
about parking it sideways is that people driving by get a nice view
of your Delorean as they drive by.(depending on your driveway)

Travis has enhanced the mystery of imagination by showing us step by
step, the construction of the "power plant" used in his version of the
futuristic BTTF DeLorean. As with all of us who are owners of this car,
what we do
with it , be it restore or customize, or a touch of each, shows the labour
of
love we share. He has the unique capability to explain and show in
detail, things that some of us cannot imagine. I was amazed to watch the
start
and final presentation. I hope the next phase will be as interesting.

This is stuff Delorean World or DW or "D1 Publication" should pay for
and publish. Who give a ..... for a travel brochure in a specialty auto
publication.Face facts: they have run out of  "pure" things to write about
relating
to the original DeLorean, and the "reason d'etre" of its editor, purist Ed
Burnstein.
 Just my humble thoughts.

D Rex Update:

The Evansville Autofest will be the debut of many new options on the
D Rex that I did not have time to complete before the Memphis Show.
The new options include some awesome (hidden) Blue Neon lights for
the underside of the vehicle, the addition of the Stealth Lighting
Systems diamond shaped driving lights, with a 7 light light-bar on the
roof, and, last but not least, the onboard driver assist cameras.

At least the two color cameras (front and rear) will be ready to go,
and if there is time, the "quarter view cams" and "crush cams" will
be in place as well.  Eric Weber has been tirelessly assisting with
the electronic and lighting upgrades over the past week, so thanks
again Eric.  There will not be time to get a custom new sound system
in place for this show, but Eric has big plans in that department.

One more prototype option may debut as well - Eric's BTTF style door
opening sound effects device.  We'll see if it's ready in time.

See you at the show.

Later,
Rich W.

Ok folks, I'm only going to repeat this one more time! The problem isn't the
battery DRAINING until it is DEAD - the Sears "Security" Diehard battery has
INTERNAL an auto-shut off that triggers when the voltage drops a couple of
volts - saving enough energy to start the car when I return.  Therefore, the
current drain can be enough to trigger the shut off (I think it's 10.5
volts).

I would have the battery load tested. It is true 30 ma. is a
significant drain but if your battery is old it doesn't have the full
capacity of a new one. If it is more than 4 years old it is probably
at about 1/2 capacity. Sears will load test for free and since you
have a Sears there might be some trade-in. Another problem with a lot
of Deloreans is that they just aren't used a whole lot so the battery
never really gets fully charged up. Being in a constant state of
discharge causes the battery to go bad faster. Especially storing for
the winter and letting it go dead. Lead-acid batteries don't live long
with these kind of cycles.
