Ok,
This comes from such a dear dear old friend of the DOA, I am
always surprised at how incorrect he is. First of all, D-1's only
financial contributions are just the same as DMC Houston, PJ Grady,
DMCenter, Baurle etc. He pays for his ads, also, he pays the same price
as every one else, even in this issue, The fact that he has so many, is
because he makes a lot of money and hence a larger advertising budget. Ed
isn't even the first member, And the DOA has been around longer than D-1,
longer than DEREP (his first DeLorean venture). The writer was expelled
because he was a nuisance, and was disrupting the function of the board,
he obviously still has issues with the board, and is trying to cause
trouble any way he can. Do your homework, The magazine costs nearly 12k a
month to print, (monthly installments, spread out over the year). The
dues raise was due to cost increases over the last 10 years.

Subject: [DML] Moving to SF Bay Area, need service and club info

I'm moving from Arizona to the San Francisco Bay Area in a couple of weeks,
and I'm looking to get in touch with any owners in the area who can help get
me set up with the local club and point me to any nearby service shops.  My
car is and will continue to be a daily driver, so I'll need to make regular
use of a shop.  I've visited the NCDMC page, which is quite useful, but I'd
love it if any individual owners got in touch with me and shared their
service and club experiences.

Thanks,

DMCH (Houston) does good work.
That's not to say they can't make mistakes, I am certain they are still
human ;-).
I trust them with my car for all those things I can't do (and the list isn't
tiny), and would certainly buy a reconditioned model from them based on
that. But, I found mine on my own and have been generally very fortunate
that it was well maintained. That said... this year has been the toughest.
Something about turning 21, I guess. Kind of like when I turned 31 my hair
started to desert me....

Subject: [DML] Buying Thoughts

This is a long email but what do you expect from a new person.

I'm thinking about getting a Delorean for daily driving. I've been
looking at dmcnews.com for awhile and have emailed usadmc.com a few
times. I've been pondering getting a delorean for awhile now but have
only gotten serious about it in the last month. However, I come to the
list with questions.

As I'm planning on getting one for daily driving, I dont want to get one
that needs constant repair. As a result, I've been looking at and
pondering usadmc.com's refurbishing program. It is a bit exspensive but
the hope is that I would not be in a constant state of repair on the
car, granted the car is 20 years old. Is it worth the $32k? The
performance engine seems nice, all in all I'd end up around $40k if I
went with this route (modified engine, xenon headlights, changed
suspension for the most part). Any thoughts on this path?

I am wondering what the list's opinion is of this program compared to
getting one from someone online that is selling. An issue I have with
buying a car directly from an individual is the likely inability of me
being able to inspect the car to see if it has been taken car of and is
in working order and worth the price.

I am also wondering if anyone knows of a Delorean in the Clearwater, FL
area or somewhere near by. I've only ever had a chance to look at a
delorean up close but have never been inside of one nor ridden in one.
This is one thing I would like to be able to do before I go purchasing
one. My transportation is a bit limited right now so it is more likely
that if anyone is willing to give me a ride to see what it is like, it
would have to come to me.

I'm open for tips on purchasing, things to look for, etc. Like I said
before, I dont want to buy one directly from an individual to find out
that they didnt take good care of it or failed to make needed repairs.

I figure it will be about a year before I actually buy a delorean which
gives me a year to save up more (larger down payment) and a year of
investigation.

I've glanced thru the list some, came across the technical link on
dmcnews.com. How many people have had problems with the trailing arm
bolt as it is one thing that would worry me unless I knew it had been
changed out for what seems to be a better bolt.

Whatever delorean I end up getting, I'm planning on keeping due to the
type of car it is. I'd much rather keep it maintained, show it off, and
use it more or less for daily driving, than to let it sit or to sell it
off. I want to get one, but I also want to get one that is worth keeping
and using and not get one that is going to sit around needing repairs
and fixes.

The one I'd end up getting would probably be a manual with gray interior.

Any thoughts or help is appreciated. ICQ or AIM me (UIN# 18424260, AIM:
LightningTH).

Someone is offering DeLorean Parts List software on ebay, so I figured, what
the heck, for $5..... Anyway, as several DML'ers subsequently pointed out to
me thru ebay, it's the same software available for free from the dmcnews
website! Duh.  Thank you to those who pointed this out to me. I guess selling
free software isn't illegal, but it seems unethical, especially since the
seller no doubt knows darn well where it came from.

Being the file is mpeg1, I guess you havent tried running divx on it.
I'm downloading it now and will try compressing it down (should compress
quite a bit being the video is only 20 minutes long). I was compressing
20 minutes episodes to ~125mb.

Todd,
What you describe/desire is what the DML is . . . only paperless with no
effort/cost on designing/printing. We have an area to share images. We are fee to
submit. We have a buy & sell section. The brunt of the work is on the moderators
shoulders updating the posts and also Dave S. who is the admin of dmcnews.com.
Don't get me wrong I love a physical magizine over a digital version but it is
more efficient, effective and faster to reach the masses (D owners/enthusiasts)
using the DML or other digital means.

Sadly there are more "lurkers" than "posters" and some of those stories never get
told.

Actually you know what would be even more exciting? If
everyone on the DML chiped in there 2 cents on either
a weird story or there project or whatever, and we put
it all together and made our own magazine out of it.
<snip>
Real Storys about real cars and there owners. If the venue guys would like to
have a spread of "items for sale" or just advertising
we could do that too. It would be a cool project to
work on. If everyone submited one artical, or
something entertaining, or a picture, or even just a
pic of themselves with an arrow saying "this is me and
my car" that would be awesome. I think it would
anyway.

Subject: Older cars as daily transportation

This is a long response, but what do you expect from an aging man.

As the owner of 4 Lincoln Mark V's, 2 AMC Spirits (one of which I
drove in high school), a Ford truck, and a DeLorean (all inspected &
on the road, though not all fully restored yet), I do feel qualified
to answer this one.

Can an older car be reliably used for daily transportation? Definitely
yes. The NEWEST vehicle in my stable is the truck (1985), which has
towed purchases from as far as the Great Lakes. I regularly drive the
Lincolns 1000 interstate miles. Louie G and I recently zipped almost
to Georgia and back in one day in our D's. These vehicles are much
more than a hobby for me -- they are my daily transportation. Next
stop is a Schwinn.

BUT...

An older car rarely enters one's life in such condition. It can take
months just to debug a car and bring it mechanically up to speed.
Restoration takes even longer. I would realistically expect to spend 6
- 12 months, start to finish. The car is usually roadable during most
of that time, but in various states of interior and exterior
disrepair. It's a long, exhausting, aggravating process, but if you
stick with it, the end result is a better looking, higher quality
vehicle with longer life expectancy than anything available in today's
showrooms.

Please note: all this time spent resurrecting a "fine new ride" serves
two other very important purposes.
1) you will become intimately familiar with all aspects of your car,
almost to the point you could tear it down and reassemble with your
eyes closed. This knowledge is invaluable when something goes wrong
(it will). You can quickly and correctly diagnose the problem. Repairs
made yourself cost the parts alone. Should a third party mechanic
become involved, he is much less likely to screw something up (perhaps
innocently) if you can explain the particulars of your car, probably
unfamiliar to him.
2) you will form an emotional attachment to the vehicle. This bond
will keep you from sending the poor thing to a crusher should it ever
suffer a REAL crisis.

The biggest problem I see with purchasing a "restored" DeLorean (other
than that astronomical price tag) is you miss the above. Our world is
full of people roaring up & down the highways in cars they understand
little about other than the sound system (and where the gas filler
door is located). These are the folks you see on the side of the road
with a raised hood and totally perplexed look on their faces. Auto
repair facilities make a financial killing from them. They mismaintain
and abuse their vehicles to a premature death, then show up next year
in someone else's showroom complaining that such-and-such car company
just can't make a car worth a darn.

Besides, auto restoration really is quite fun.

Re: using a DeLorean in particular for daily transportation, I can see
valid reasons NOT to do this:
1) the car really isn't all that practical (wasn't designed to be.
It's a two seat sports car with limited cargo capacity)
2) every time you venture onto a public right of way, you expose your
vehicle to risk. Since our pieces come from a different price book
(and some are now a tad scarce), it's wise to limit such exposure
3) daily driving = wear & tear. The more you sit in the seat, shuffle
your feet on the carpet, and push the knobs, the sooner all will wear
out. Every twist, turn, and bump in the road takes a little toll. See
replacement parts policy under 2)
4) There's no place to put a flat 15" rear tire (I plan to engineer a
removeable Land Rover-esque bracket to attach one to the hood. Will
post a message after completed)

Please note -- above does NOT mean treat your car like a precious
porcelain vase, locked away and never used. Sitting idle is EXTREMELY
bad. How many messages on the DML have as their root cause lack of use
(it still amazes me that sellers tout "low mileage garage kept" as a
virtue). Should you find your Dream D, regularly give it the exercise
it desperately needs.

'nuff said.

I'm looking for some opinions...

Because I have a lot of brake pedal travel, I have recently done
some brake inspection on my car. I assumed I would find worn pads.
This was far from the case.

What I did find was four good working calipers, all the pads in
great shape, and four good rotors. I saw no evidence of leaking.
I did bleed all of the system completely, put in fresh hydraulic
fluid - but this did not change anything.

My brakes do work, no shaking, hopping or squealing. No pulling.
Just an aweful lot of brake pedal travel.

Any ideas? Master cylinder?  I don't see any leaks at the master
cylinder.

Hey DeLorean Guru's

I need some help with the cronology of the DeLorean in the "1983
Production Year", if you want to call it that.

I have a guy who is selling a Black exterior DeLorean, and it looks
perfect, just like it came from the factory.  Actualy, he claims that
as well.  I know there was a topic here about this 2 years ago, but
my seach utility isnt fully functional yet, (availible March 2003)
and I was wondering, I knew DeLorean had a plan for painted cars,
anyone who read Stainless Steel Illusion can tell you that, but I
wondered with all of the lay offs and hurry mode the people were in
the latter 82' production year, would they have time to factory paint
a few cars?

I want to tell this bum that the car was painted sometime after
factory, however something just occured to me, there were a "FEW"
painted cars from Dealers at that time, although not originaly from
the factory.  Anyway, i told him i wasnt interested, stainless is the
way to go.  (besides that, its perfect)  I just need someone to tell
me if this could have been factory, or dealer.  Thats all i need to
know.

Subject: Car audio question..

Today I installed my new Alpine radio.  I'll spare everyone the details, but
the install went very well, due to lots of preparation and DML research.
But I have a problem.

The radio basically works OK - all functions work - power antenna, proper
illumination, no sparks or shorts, and everything else in the car still
works fine.  This radio has a built in 27 watt RMS/60 watt peak x 4 channel
amp, which is powered by a direct connection to the battery (positive and
ground).

Here's the problem:  The sound is good upto volume level 14 or 15 (I know
the numbers are meaningless, but it's just a point of reference).  That
level is a good, normal level for listening to most things and still carry a
conversation with someone.  As soon as I turn it up past that point, I get
increasing amounts of loud static.   It's not the speakers clipping, or a
clipping sound at all, the best I can do is describe it as loud static.  I'm
also pretty sure it the amount of static is proportional to the amount of
bass in the music and/or the bass setting on the radio.

Here's what I think the problem may be, but I'd like some professional (or
at least knowledgeable) opinions.  The Delorean wiring harness for the Craig
radio share a common (-) lead between the front and rear speakers for each
side. (Right common and left common), plus four (+) leads for each speaker
(6 total leads).   Of course, the new radio has separate + and - leads for
each speaker (eight total leads).  I combined the each of the two (-) leads
for the left and right sides to match up to the harness (8 leads to 6
leads).  Is it likely that the combining of these two sets of two leads from
the radio is causing the amplifier to cause this static?  Should I go back
in and just wire the speakers directly to the radio leads?

Besides this one problem, the radio sounds great - no hiss or hum or engine
interference, etc.

Thanks,

-Hank #1619

I am deeply saddened to report the Jack Martins recently died of a aneurysm.

He was a pioneer in air bag development and worked with JZD in building
the first two DeLoreans with airbags that were crash tested.

Jack was involved in original safety testing of the D including issues
involving the escaping from a flip car with gull wing doors and whether
the side window should be glued in as a structural member.

Jack has worked as an automobile design consultant for almost 40 years.
He also has worked as an legal expert investigating many design problems.

He will be deeply missed by our family.

Subject: holy frazzled speedo cables, batman

You wouldn't believe what I found in my speedo cable. It was becoming
unraveled INSIDE the cable.

I thought just the cable in the angle drive broke-- but nope. I pulled lower
speedo cable out to grease after installing the new angle drive and found
that I couldn't turn it. Frustrated after messing with it, I stuck some
pliars on the AD end and pulled and saw a big mess ease out of the sheath.

On top of that, the cable end of the AD is all wobbly/warped. It ain't
straight. I am thinking that based on the fact that the AD cable was too
long, it was warped by the dust cap pushing it back. But I have know idea
what happened to my lower speedo cable (it was exactly one year old, too).
I am uploading a pic to the Files section-- take a look at that mess and
tell me what you think.

Thinking along the lines of BOSCH since so much else of the car is from
 bosch.<<

Try a Bosch #AL156X - its 110 amp and reportedly bolts right up.  I haven't used it myself, but PRV wizard John Lane swears by it.

I MAY have one, if someone can tell me how to know the difference.  It was a twin turbo, and was in a very low VIN car once owned by DMC exec Roy Nesseth.  The motor was "toasted", and all of the turbo parts including the exhaust have been sold but the internals would most likely be okay.  Contact me directly if interested.
