Subject: DeLorean Mid Alantic Spring Social

Hi Everyone,
Just returned safe and sound from the Spring Social in New Jersey.
Funny, I live in Arizona but I only get sunburned badly when I go to NJ.
How about getting that hole in the ozone layer fixed before I come
back?....:)
I wanted to tell everyone that this was an amazing event!  DanRC30
(aren't there too many DeLorean owners named Dan?) really put on a great
show.  Thanks, Dan for securing Don's Jaguar for the tech day and the great
dinners and events you planned.  We had a lot of fun the whole weekend.  It
was great meeting so many new people, new and current owners alike.
Scott Tice put on a great raffle and there were a lot of great
things for sale as well.  This was a great event and so far the best
DeLorean event I have been to in NJ.  We did door adjustments, as Dave
Teitelbaum wrote, and I was assisting.  I am happy to say that not one
torsion bar was even damaged....:)
Jim Reeve came out from Minnesota to play at the event and was a
great help.  Lots of people were yelling "TIMMAY!" across the parking lot of
Don's Jaguar looking for some assistance and Jim never faltered.  He zipped
back and forth between cars and it was nice to see that everything he
touched was better than before he got to it.
It was really interesting to see Mike Pack in action.  Truly a
gentleman, Mike was up to his elbows in gasoline getting a fuel pump
assembly back together and working correctly for a new owner from Maryland.
We all saw about two gallons of gas pouring down onto the ground from the
bottom of the DeLorean as Mike leapt into action.  Armed with some clamps, a
screw driver, and a heat gun, Mike got the assembly fitting correctly and
back together and we never had to use the fire extinguisher.  It was amazing
to see him in action giving his time and effort to make certain a fellow
owner would be safe and make it home without incident.  Makes me feel good
that we have so many people willing to donate their time in the community,
and all of the work done was quality.
More thanks go out to Deb and Rob Grady for donating their time and
making this event a complete success.  Deb was really quick with her
inventory as Dave and I were calling for struts left and right....:)  She
manned the parts table all day on Saturday and I don't think anyone had to
order anything....it was all there ready for action.  Great work and
planning!  I learned the most from watching Rob inspect the owners' cars.  I
learned where so many things were, including the oil filler cap.  (Yes, Dan
made fun of me for that, but as many of you know, although I own two
DeLoreans, they aren't out here in the desert....YET.)  Rob was always
willing to answer any questions about what or why or even how on other
people's cars for me.  He's a professional and a true gentleman.
You cannot find people like this anywhere else.  It's just amazing
to see how generous everyone is with their skills and time.  If you ever get
a chance to attend a Mid Atlantic club event I highly suggest it.  New
things are in the works and the club is moving in the right direction.  Lots
of exciting things are in store.  I even got to take Rob's green car out for
some light offroading, but don't tell him!

See you in Memphis with my car!

To All,
I would personally like to thank all those who attended our club's Spring
Social in New Jersey this past Saturday and made it another great event.
Congratulations to Matt Olans for coming in from Arizona and getting the
farthest traveled award.  Also to Jim Reeve who cam in from Minnesota.  I
would like to thank Rob and Debby Grady of PJ Grady for again giving their
time to spend the weekend with us.  They are both very generous people and
are valuable assets to the DeLorean Community.  If you haven't looked at
Kevin Abato's site listed below, be sure to, there are some great group shots
of the cars.  Special thanks to Dan Deutch for organizing another great
weekend.  As our new Activities Director I am sure he will continue do a
great job.  Again thank you to all who came and all who helped to make this a
memorable weekend.  See you in Memphis!

approx. 6.5 hours from Memphis.

The hotel is off of Interstate 40 at the Cedar Bluff/Executive Park
exit in West Knoxville.  The group rate for the DeLorean group is
$58.50. When calling in for the reservation, do mention you are with
the DeLorean group.

For those that arrive early enough, we will go out to eat or just
hang out at the hotel and order pizza.

Jerry,

i was the one who said it was near the cat - i'm not sure exactly where it
goes, because i found mine loose sitting by the heatshield.  i don't know
where it was supposed to go, but obviously from somewhere in that area.  the
engine cradle sounds likely to me. if you can't find it, your's probably
already fell off!!

David,

I do have to agree with you there.  Although it was my car that had
the water pipe come off,  it was something i was well aware about.
I had also started to buy some of the pipes beforehand.  Time
restraints and the large amount of brake work i did to make my car
safer kept my from replacing my water pipes sooner.  I had Rob Grady
go over my car and i got, from what i thought, a good review on my
car.  He only had several things to tell me about, all but 2 i was
aware about.  I notcied that several others had quite a large list
of task to acomplish on there cars.  One large aspect i notcied is
that alot of the cars has very bad warm-ups, and reved up and down
alot.  Most likely this was because of a bad oxygen sensor, co
adjustment or a vacumn leak.  One scary part was that several cars
did not even carry a fire extinquisher with them.  One thing that I
like to do, which is optional is to make sure the under part of your
engine is nice and clean.  When it is like this you can check for
oil leaks from the pan, valve covers and at the heads.  This is not
so critical for some, but is nice when you run synthetic motor oil
like I do.  I do not mean to pick apart anyones car, mine is
certainly not perfect by all respects, but i try to keep aware of
whats going on/wrong with it.

Where should the Brass screws be adjusted too? Seated in or seated
out? Or is this an adjustment that requires special tools?

Thank you Dave!  You did help point out a couple of things to me about my
car that I now plan on taking care of....It was VERY helpful

Ok...I admit it...I was the idiot with 16psi in the front tire...I knew it
looked low, but had no idea it was THAT low!  I put air in it on the way
home, and it improved the cars handling a lot!  Thanks for bringing that
info to light.  I did not know about the sticker in the glove compartment,
and had not checked the pressure since I took the car out last month from
storage.

Side note:  I (I'm sure as well as some other owners who attended) just
bought our cars recently and have already put a lot of money into it....I
know things still need to be done, but money constraints do limit what we
can do right after buying a car.  Kinda hard to install EVERY recommended
update right away.

Andy,

You said:
"........it should never need adjusting for the life of the
vehicle ......"

This is incorrect. As the engine ages normal wear and component replacements
will alter the tolerances the factory adjustment was set at. The factory
setting is only good for the first 35 to 50k miles. Because the K-Jetronic
system is a mechanical system adjustments must be made from time to time to
compensate for tolerance changes. The L-Jetronic and later Bosch systems
have electronic sensors the adjust the CO mixture as the engine ages.

I do, however, agree that the CO mixture adjustment should not be altered
unless it is absolutely necessary.

With my continuing trek to make an appearence at every DeLorean event
nationwide, I have just returned to Minnesota from the spring social
in Flemington, NJ.  I had the opportunity to meet many of the east
coast fellas, and do some work on a few of the cars.  I would also
like to give thanks to Matt Olans for letting me stay with him, just
like down in AZ last Feburary.  Although I flew out there and
attended without my DeLorean, I do plan on driving my DeLorean out in
October for the Fall Foliage tour.  If anyone dares to beat me for
the furthest traveled (with car) this fall, I say bring it on!  So
for all the east coast owners, I'll see you in Memphis.

For those who were skeptical like I was . . .
I had a chance to meet with Casey over the weekend and see his shift knobs. I was
concerned that they would be like my cheap JC Whitney knob or some Autozone
purchase but these are not. He had them turned on a computer controled laythe
(sp?) out of a solid stock of metal. The inside is threaded to screw on the
existing shifter with out a plastic insert or set screw that normally would chew
up the shift stick (at least that's what I call it). I like the Aluminum over the
Stainless it seems to match the car better, but thats just me. IMHO . . . these
are well over 100% better than the stock plastic ball.
---
Casey is unable to attend the Graceland Show and asked me to take some shift
knobs for others to see "first hand" who may be concerned about the quality,
look, feel etc. like I was. So for those meticulous types like me, I will have
shift knobs to examin and/or purchase. To find me ask any Ohio DeLorean owner to
point me out. I'm the curly haired, half shaven head freak walking around with
out a D of my own . . . until next year!

Disclaimer:
I am not affiliated, on staff, on the payrole of, or in kahoots with Putsch
Performance Design. I'm just doing the "Paul Harvey" (endorsing a product I have
personally found to meet my standards) and helping out another Ohio owner, all of
whom are my friends.

Not that this really applies to the DMC (I think), since I imagine the
market for stolen DMC wheels is fairly small. Still, a pretty swanky way
to protect wheels in general. Chalk this post up to "general interest",
rather than DMC-specific. =)

I just completed a 1400 mile trip in my D.  In general
the car was a joy to drive, as it always is, but I did
experience a problem that I had never encountered
before; a leaky windshield.  I plan to have the the
glass resealed by a "glass shop", but I wondered what
had caused this to suddently occur (I have driven in
downpours many times without any leaks).

The car had just recently been in a "DeLorean repair

several times. I'm not trying to lay blame, but I
wonder if that activity could cause the problem.

Any thoughts?

Subject: Headlights modified from OEM configuration?

Andrew & I have created a bit of confusion about the proper OEM
configuration of the DeLorean's headlight operation, so I'm posting an
explanation to the list to answer the following question asked by a list
member:

"Our DeLorean is also set up so all four headlights come on with the brights
selected.  Are you sure that isn't a factory set up?"

Yes and no.  You could very well have the factory setup and not realize what
is switching on and off.  The low beams have two lights in one.  In the same
headlight fixture there is a low beam and then a separate high beam assist.
When you switch on the high beams, the dedicated high beam fixtures turn on
(the ones closer to the fake grille) while the outer low beam fixtures
switch modes so that the low beam portion turns off and the high beam assist
portion turns on.  So it may appear that all the filaments are powered when
really only the high beams and high beam assists are on.  A modified car
would have ALL the filaments powered while the high beams are on.

The way to tell for sure on your car is to pull up to a wall with the
headlights on and flip on your high beams.  Flipping the lever forward (away
from you) should latch the high beams & high beam assists on while switching
off the low beams.  Pulling the lever toward you should switch the high
beams & high beam assists on but not interfere with the low beams -- meaning
that if the low beams are off, then they stay off.  If they are already on,
then they stay on.  But be aware that pulling the lever toward you is a
temporary 'flash' that should work even when the headlights are off.
Confusing eh?  To further complicate matters, there is a wiring variation on
the brake lights so that some cars allow the brake lights to work while the
ignition is off while others only work while the ignition is on.  I'm not
sure if this same variation also applies to the high beam 'flash' working
while the ignition & main headlight switch are off.  Try yours to see.

If you want to simulate what it looks like to have your low beams modified
to stay on, then turn your headlights on and pull & hold the turn signal
lever toward the driver.  This will power ALL the headlight filaments
simultaneously.  If your lights are aimed at a close wall, then you should
see a total of six bright spots (three per side, two of which are coming
from each low beam fixture.)

There was a discussion about this on the DML last year (I think).  Someone
was asking why the low beams shut off when the high beams turn on (that
might have been me(!), but I don't remember particulars like that).  DMC Joe
spoke up and said that the reason for it is that having the area in front of
the car lit up causes the iris to constrict making it harder to see
distances at night.  The DOT determined that people could see distances
better if the foreground was darker.  So that is why the low beams don't run
with the high beams.

I have seen mail order catalogues (such as JC Whitney) that sell relay kits
that keep the low beams on with the high beams claiming that this is safer.
The ads read something to the effect of, "Why turn off your low beams when
you can have more light?"  But the fact of the matter is that 'more' is not
always better.

Now the situation with the Xenarc HIDs is different.  Those have to stay on
with the high beams because it takes a minute or so for them to warm up.
Switching them off while the high beams come on would be dangerous because
then you would have to wait for them to warm up each time while they come
back on.  But keeping them on is not a disadvantage because the beam pattern
with it is tightly focused in a horizontal plane.  They don't light the
immediate foreground as brightly as standard (American scatter style)
headlights.  In comparison they are more like "short range high beams".
Then when you switch on the high beams with HIDs, they effectively extend
the range without using traditional high beam assists.  In a sense, the high
beam fixtures ARE the high beam assists.

I hope this makes sense.  :-)

Subject: Re: Trailing Arm Bolts - Update

Marc - I have not yet run across an installation that was
double-nutted, in all of the cars that I have personally changed the
TAB's in.  Several of the bent bolts were still apparently tight ...
so it's not the nut backing off that initiated the bending (in those
cars at least).  Other bent bolts were loose as well, and some were
missing some or all of the shims.  I can't give you a firm position on
the nut issue at this point, as it relates to bent TAB's.  Please
advise on your experiences to date.

Subject: Remote starter/alarm/remote locking

Hi all

I really wanted an off-the-shelf remote for my central locking. This
was  for two reasons: 1) I trust my door lock module, and 2) since I got
my car, the lock barrel on the driver's side has been total cactus.
Being the early 2-key system, I want to track down a replacement rather
than replace with the later version.

Fellow list member and good friend James RG bought and fitted a remote
starter for his automatic. Being a 5-speed, I couldn't fit one without
the risk of accidentally triggering it while in gear.... or so I
thought.

Enter the Ultrastarter 2250M from mypushcart.com (some eBay regulars may
recognise this company - they sell a lot on eBay). The "M" stands for
"Manual" and I was intrigued as to how they made sure the car could
never be remote started in gear. I won't go into it here - it's on the
website, but I was so impressd by the simplicity (it requires no
additional switches or device for keeping track of the gear-stick), that
I bought one. Price was also a factor ($69 for the simple version, $99
for the alarm model), as was the original requirement of remote locking,
also expandability. I researched how the system could trigger the boot
(trunk) and designed an interface so that with the one keyfob you can
open one or both doors. The electronics will need a bit of twiddling,
and I need a pair of actuators, but that's a "down the track" project.

Yesterday I fitted the system - it fits into the space behind the lock
module beautifully, and with scotch-locks, you can make all the
connections required (I avoided using the 30A capability of the start,
ignition and accessories outputs, and just drove the stock relays,
making no high-current connections). I used the open pins on the lock
module circuit breaker for the power, and the only connections required
that aren't in the relay compartment are the indicators, brakes and
handbrake switch. The instructions provide one output for the "parking
lights" - you could use the headlights, but I wanted an obvious external
indication without other road users thinking I'm flashing them! A couple
of diodes and two wires down to the steering column, and bingo, my
indicators flash with the system. My foglight wiring already sends the
brake light feed down the centre console, so that was easy enough, and
the trickiest one was the handbrake - now I know that the apparent twin
wire coming from the back of the handbrake is in fact the earth feed to
the switch, and the switched output (black and white, as per wiring
diagram).

The connections from the handbrake and brake lights are part of the
not-in-gear system. I also took the opportunity when wiring up my
starter relay to perform the recall on it (early VIN)

Anyway, AFAIK nobody's discussed these systems for the DeLorean before.
If anyone's interested I can go into further detail with actual
connections etc etc. NB my car likes to start with no throttle, despite
what it says in the manual.

I haven't fitted the alarm siren, but that's all that's left apart from
the door-launchers.

All the best
