I am 21 years old with two speeding tickets under my belt and I am paying
$900.00 a year for full coverage on my Delorean. Is that good?

Also I took the largest deductable that the company offered ($1000 dollar
deductable). However they havent given me an actual set amount, for how much
my car is ensured to... is this normal, or do they usually give you a dollar
amount? How is this value determined? If the car is destroyed, I want to
know how much I get! Eff.

Aaron,

The cost of shipping your car to one of the DeLorean vendors for repair
probably is not very much.  Get an estimated shipping cost and take it to
the adjustor when they are estimating the repair.  Also, give the adjustor
DMC Houstons Web site for parts.

The inertia switch might have tripped and that could be the reason the
engine will not start.

What do you need a lawyer for, are you going to sue the Deer?  ;>)

Subject: [DML] Advice needed: Unfortunate occurrance

Sadly, #1506 hit a deer tonight.  Headed westbound on I-74, between
Indianapolis and Urbana-Champaign, a deer struck my D while I was
going about 65.  I was in the right hand lane, and it ran across from
the median.  If you're saying "wow, that's unlucky!" then you don't
know me very well.

Fortunately, there isn't as much damage as I originally feared.  The
front fascia is in bad shape, as well as the headlights and housings
on the driver's side.  The front driver's side fender has been
whacked out of shape a little bit, the windshield is smashed, the
hood is bent slightly in front near the fascia on the left side, and
the driver's side mirror was ripped clean off.  The front grill is
gone, too.

I didn't immediately see any other problems, other than the fact that
the car wouldn't start up again.  The engine's in pretty good shape,
the electrical systems seem ok, and it was trying to turn over...

I have some questions, since a lot of people who read this list have
probably had similar encounters in the past (although probably not
with their Delorean):

1.  Should I get a lawyer?  I have progressive insurance, and my car
is insured for a large amount.  They seem pretty helpful.  However,
they *are* an insurance company...  I have a clean driving record
(except for a speeding ticket in Montana in '97 -- stupid
libertarians!!), and I still pay out the wazoo for insurance.  It's
time for them to finally pay up.

2.  How do I go about making sure I get an accurate estimate for
repairs, and make sure that the insurance company pays the WHOLE bill?

3.  Who should I get to do the work?  Is this even an option for me,
or is the insurance company, in their infinite wisdom, going to try
to set me up somewhere?  Should I have the car sent all the way to
someplace like Houston?

4.  Anyone out there have a foggy idea how much a fix like this would
cost?

5.  What other questions should I be asking?

Thanks in advance for your help.  Hopefully, 1506 will be an up-and-
running daily driver once again within a month...

Aaron

There is no reason to just change the solenoids. Visually examine them
and the wires and plug. Measure the resistance of the coils, it should
be equal and approximittly 0.25 ohms with infinite resistance to
ground. You could change th "O" rings. If there is a lot of materiel
in the pan you MUST clean the filter. Contact me offlist for the
procedure.(It can be done.) Don't forget to check the final drive
fluid level. On the automatic it is not part of the transmission in
that it has it's own fluid. Verify that the vacuum hose is connected
and not leaking to the modulater, and when it is all put back together
set the line pressure as per G:05:03. DO NOT MIX UP THE POSITION OF
THE TWO SOLENOIDS. See notice G:06:02. Also check the govenor control
cable adjustment as per G:05:02 and if you are really conciencious you
can check the micro same page. The linkage adjustment is rarely off
but that can also be checked and adjusted. BTW if you have a leak from
the trans at the linkage cable there is a fix for it.

Mike Pack well described the actual car that started the thread, but let me
add a few general observations, for the sake of the list....  The rubber boot
that supports the fuel pump may look smooth and supple at the top where you
can see it, yet it can still be extremely rotten and cracked where it sits in
the fuel. That's more than likely the source of fuel laying in a pump boot
neck, which of course is below the top level of the fuel, if you're fuller
than about a half tankful.  Even a tiny crack can do it, especially since the
fuel tank is under pressure due to the fuel injection layout.  When the
rubber gets gnarly like that, it's just impossible for it to get a good seal
around the neck of the fuel pump.  How the heck the fuel pump can work with
the electrical contacts submerged is beyond me, although mine worked that way
too.  You'd think it would at least be a short circuit situation.  Check
carefully while it's apart.  You'll probably need to replace more than just
the boot. An old, wimpy pick up hose can suction almost flat, starving and
soon wrecking the fuel pump itself, which is the most expensive component. I
replaced everything rubber back to the solid fuel lines, just to be sure, as
well as draining and cleaning the tank. The fuel lines that connect to the
top of the tank are special.  Get them from a DeLorean vendor.  He can cut
them to the correct length and even install the banjo fittings.  Why waste
time struggling, when you could be driving, or at least working to pay for
your DeLorean?  Your time is valuable, too!

I'll chip in what little I can.

The car probably isn't starting because the inertia switch is tripped.
Look in the drivers footwell for a little black box mounted by the clutch.
Make sure the plunger on the top of it is not up. That turns off the fuel
pump in case of an accident.

Depending on where you are in the country, you have a few options for
getting a repair quote. If you're in the northeast/midwest, go to PJ Grady
in New York. If you're central/southern, check out Houston. Southeast,
have DMC JOE take a look, and if you're in the southwest, take it to Don
at DeLorean Motor Center.

And I'm not going to ask if the deer's okay. :)

I was told specifically by my Allstate agent that even if I didn't carry
collision on my D, that a deer strike would be covered under my
comprehensive. As far as getting it fixed, they'll probably squirm a bit and
want a local shop to do the work, along with finding the cheapest used or
repaired parts they can get. But I don't think you'd have a problem arguing
that a Delorean shop is the only place qualified to do the work. In which
case they're looking at higher transportation costs. I'd suggest you don't
sign away any of your rights until you're convinced you'll be getting the
service you've been paying your premiums for.

Hi All

The governor came out of #2727 today with the purpose of re-engineering the system for
longevity and to add functions such as semi-automatic shifting and adjustable
shift-points (and also so we know what to look for when James Grant brings his D down
next week - sticks in 2nd). The stock device is worth less than £15 in component value,
and the circuit itself shouldn't be too hard to reverse-engineer. It also has glaring
oversights in its design, as we all know. This is right up our street, and exactly the
sort of project Rich works at every day of his working week.

get the car appraised by a collector car appraiser and give a copy of that appraisal to
your insurance person. that way you will get the actual value of your car in case it
gets totaled or stolen and make sure you insurance person will insure your delorean to
its appraised value. i think you are paying what you should be paying for insurance for
your age with two speeding tickets.

I have been planning to mess with my auto tranny governor or a while now but
couldnt find anywhere that had axial tantalum caps with a good  temperature
rating. I searched for weeks, and finally found a website that has some
badass caps! They are high temperature (200C!!!), wet, tantalum electrolytic
caps, "HAQ" and "HAR" types. They are designed for the aerospace industry.
They also have some solid ones, but the site didnt have a temperature rating
for them... I am going to call them on Monday and try to order some, they
have a distributor right in my town!

The website is www.vishay.com

It's even worse than that. AA admits to destruction of documents.
Documents that might tell what they knew and when they knew it. It
seems they DID learn something from the Delorean debacle when the
bankrupcy court made them come up with millions because of their duty
to the investers which they subverted to their fees from DMC. Not only
was there destruction of documents they were "double dipping". They
were collecting huge consulting fees along with accounting fees. AA
was not about to turn Enron in and kill the goose that was laying all
of those golden eggs! Who watches the watchers? AA should lose their
license to do business for this, they had a duty to protect the public
and did not. They will just pay a fine and go on with business as
usual. They will just add some obscure disclaimer language into their
future contracts for further protection. Until Congress and the rest
of government gets fed up with this stuff there will be no
improvements and Enron got to the highest levels of government. In
this case not only did all of the employees lose their livelyhood,
their pensions were lost too! Even DMC couldn't do that! Never mind
the investers who understood they were assuming some risk. The poor
employees were betting their future and didn't know it.
