My advice to you is to get a thread insert like a Heli-coil or similar
and try to stay standard. Any large machinist supply or power
transmission dealer can help with the insert, drills, taps, and bolt
you will need. If you can't find it localy the Delorean venders can
help.

Verify vacuum at the booster. A kinked or otherwise blocked vacuum
hose cause you not to have any power brakes. Also check the valve on
the booster where the vacuum hose connects. If the check valve is
stuck it can prevent vacuum from getting into the booster. If you
still have a hard pedal then it is possible that the booster is bad.

You are a far more restrained man than I am. If someone hit my
car, they would be recieving their eulogy within minutes...

If it's a simple dent, it may be possible to easily remedy. But if
you're not carefull, you can end up causing more expensive
damage to repair. If you send in a picture to DMC Houston, they
should be able to quote you an estimate for the repair. As it has
been said, body work is a repiar that requires more of an artist to
repair than a mechanic.

To remove the tank you should first drain it of all fuel. Remove the
plate underneath and all parts and connections on top. Get into the
trunk and put your foot on it forcing the rear down. As the rear drops
then the front will move rearward and out. Clean as good as you can
and be careful not to break loose the stud inside that holds the
baffle in place. To remove and install the baffle it must be
disassembled and reassembled inside the tank so it can be folded
(squished) so you can remove it. Be careful as these parts are fragile
and expensive. Replace anything that is questionable and all rubber
that shows signs of deterieration like the boots and the pick-up hose.
Cleanliness in this area is IMPORTANT as this is a recirculating
system and anything in the tank WILL get picked up and circulated. Run
the car a little and then replace the filter to get rid of anything
you missed. Be very careful when working with gasoline as even the
fumes are dangerous. To reinstall the tank a little grease on the
rubber pads surrounding the tank will make it a lot easier going back
together. With the tank out inspect the frame, wiring and everything
you can as it is really open in that area now and you can see areas of
the car that are usually hidden.

Subject: DeLorean Car Show in Memphis

Greetings, everyone!  Don't forget the DeLorean Car Show in Memphis
next June.  Is anyone familiar with the sequence of events that will
occur at show?  I read through the website
(http://www.deloreancarshow.com/index.html), but it is a little
unclear on a few issues. 

On Friday there is a dinner, some guest speakers, and part of a
Graceland tour (requiring the Graceland Platinum Pass).  The website
states that "doors open at 7:30 and dinner is served around 8:00", and
 that they will have the "first part of the Platinum tour at the
dinner".  The site also says "Location [of the dinner] will be
determined by the number of people attending.".  On the registration
form, the cost for the dinner and the Graceland Platinum Pass are
listed separately.  Personally, I'm not all that interested in the
Graceland tour, but I do want to see the guest speakers and attend the
dinner.  So, my questions are the following -- do I have to purchase
the Graceland Platinum Pass (in addition to the dinner charge) in
order to attend the dinner, and, if not, when/where will the guest
speakers be?  Or, in a single question, in order to attend the dinner
and see the guest speakers, am I required to also purchase the
Graceland Platinum Pass?

This question would apply to the Saturday dinner as well.

Another question to ponder -- on Saturday the car show supposedly runs
from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.  What kind of a show is this?  Is this a
public show that will be advertised and draw the general public?  Or
just a private show, where we all hang in the parking lot and check
out each others cars?

Personally, I am planning on being there on Thursday, Friday, and then
leaving on Saturday after the "surprise" event and before the Saturday
Graceland tour.  My brother lives in Memphis (most convenient!), so I
will be staying with him.  I look forward to see you all there!

We all know that the DeLorean has got no power steering.
I must admit that it is fairly easy on the steering wheel because of the front
and rear weight distribution.

But - is it possible to get power steering on the DeLorean?
Yes or no? I think it would be very nice to have power steering

And most important, if it's not possible to get power steering - WHY?
Is it because of lack of space or because of the standard DMC setup?

Just curious, and I'm not a car expert ;)

Surely enough has been said about the bolts so that anyone interested
should be able to make an enlightened decision.   I really don't want to
read any more opinions or data, what I'd really like is first hand
experiences from those who have had bolt failure.  Did they limp home or
did they have to be flat bedded?  What were the control problems when
the bolt let go and the rear end dropped?  Was there a loud noise to
alert that something big was happening so that you would automatically
react by reducing speed?   Was there enough rear end clunking before the
fact so that they knew after the fact that they should have paid better
attention?

The facts, as far as I have been able to determine (I did my homework):

First of all, zero failure rate thus far on either the upgraded bolts
the vendors are using or Toby's bolts.  Secondly, actual bolt failure is
a very tiny percentage (less than 5%), of course if yours should be one
that fails you immediately go to 100%.  Final figure is that a very high
percentage of bolts are not perfect should you inspect them, best
guestimate I can get is 30% to 50%.

If you're a worrier, change your bolts, if you're a real worrier, get
Toby's bolts.

Who knows if Chapman, Kimberly, or anyone else @ Lotus even
bothered to research this. Don't forget that the only time anyone
really put any kind of real effort into engineering the DeLorean
was when either JZD, or someone from DMC showed up. Other
than that, they shoved the prototypes into the back, and were
working on Esprits. Not even Chapman wanted to work on the
DeLorean project. The Juhan's are the one's who made him
take the contract.

I would have to go with the theory here that Lotus simply
transplanted the specs for the pivot bolts on the trailing arms to
the DMC-12 from the Esprit.

Granted the pivot bolts on the trailing arms are cause for
concern if you have not inspected them. Maintenace is the key to
detection of future problems. So worrying about a sudden failure
out of the blue probably isn't a concern. But they are a critical
component for the rear suspension. And for Chapman & Lotus
to be experts in suspension design and engineering, they
obviously failed to lived up to their reputation in this case. I'm not
knocking Lotus' ability, just their dedication to contracted
projects. I'm sure that if you own a Esprit, you probably have no
worries. But if you own a car made by another mfg who
contracted work to Lotus, be wary of what they designed.

HI

Well I thank you all for your patience but I finally managed to get enough of
the details worked out that I have posted the registration form on the web
page <A HREF="" href="http://deloreancarshow.com">http://deloreancarshow.com">Deloreancarshow.com</A>. Click on the registration tab. My special thanks to
Gary Hull for helping me last night to finish it.

Each event is priced seperately except the seminars, driving tour, and car
show which are free to attend.  The Driving tour includes a free CD or Tape.
The Platinum pass is independent of the dinner events and will be used over
the course of the whole show.  We will do it as a group at designated times
so that everyone can use them.  The deal is great since the regular price is
$32.00 for the 4 portions (Elvis's airplane tour, Elvis Museum, Elvis Car
Museum and The Graceland tour) without the pass you will not see these items.
 

The costs of each event cover the room, dinner, insurance and entertainment.

There is a Door adjustment seminar on Thursday that also is free but is not
listed on the registrations since I still have a few details to work out and
no registration is actually required anyway.

The information on the registration page is a bit detailed and longer than I
would have liked but it is necessary to make the name tags the way many of
you have expressed you would like them.  Please be as complete as you can.

I have worked extra hard on this one and have already purchased Johns tickets,
for those of you wondering if he's comming.  As of now he is definately planning on it.
Health and the aftermath of Sept 11th I cannot predict.  John has been very
helpful in planning on this one.  He really enjoyed Cleveland.  Both John and
Kathryn plan to be there.

NOTE:

There is a limited number of spaces for these events and due to fire code restrictions they cannot be changed.

I have no rooms left at the Heartbreak Hotel and only about 38 rooms remain

be a number of live entertainers and a very wide variety of music played. 
Since Memphis is the "Music Capital", music will be the driving force of the
show.

There are also some "Special" events included that I am not advertising, so you'll have to show up to find out. 

The registration is starting about a month earlier than the web page had
stated so that I could get a jump everything, plus pay off some of the up front deposits required.

If you cannot attend and you have registered, you wll get a 100% refund up to
the day before the actual event so you have nothing to risk by registering
early.

This year I have mouspads for sale with the event logos and the T-shirts are
great.  I have shown them at Houston, California and New York.

I also added an article called "MY THOUGHTS" that you may wish to read.  Its an
accumulation of comments I jotted down that you may find amusing.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I mentioned last week that I was having the high speed accelleration
issues - didn't sound like a transmission issue, but more of a fuel
delivery issue, possibly.  Anyhow, even though it was still running
ok, I decided to use the last couple days before the big "winter"
sets in and do a tuneup since I picked up this car a few weeks ago
and didn't know much about the history on it (the usual low mileage,
original everything syndrome).  Here's how it went...

Removed the two allen bolts and was able to squeeze out the
distributor cap to replace the rotor/cap with Bosch replacements.  I
also replaced the wires, spark plugs with Platinum +4's, and went
ahead and put in a new Bosch fuel filter, since a few people
mentioned that I may have something in there blocking my fuel flow
for the high speed accel. issue.  I go to start up the car after all
of this, and it starts up right away and sounds ok.  I go to drive
it, and what a mess - the car now has almost a rhythmic vibration to
it when you hit the gas.  I had a older British car that once had
this same feeling when it would foul up a plug or two...just didn't
have that smooth "purr" like it used to.  So, with that in mind, I
took it back into the garage, pulled the plugs and took another
look...all the plugs looked equal - charred black except for the top
of the +4 plug which was white.  Seeing it was all the same, I though
I'd try putting the old plugs in..just to see if it made a
difference.  Now that quick pulsating vibration is gone, but it
doesn't accerate at all...it's like the high speed acceleration
thing, but now at EVERY speed.  I give it gas...and I can barely get
it up to 25mph in the neighborhood.

I can sense the different gears engaging, so I don't think it's
the "starting in 2nd gear" syndrome... before it started running
really bad, at least it would go quicker than 25mph.  I checked
around for any vacuum lines or anything that may have been
disconnected, but didn't see any...but admittedly, it's not the
easiest area of the car to check around, since you can't see half of
what you're working with, in the first place!.  Two days ago before I
did anything, it was going up to 80 without a hitch!

Any thoughts? (other than "tough luck!" ? :) ) I'm wondering if
there's a possibility the cap wasn't put on quite right, etc..
something dumb...but in that case, I'd be surprised it would be
running at all.  It sounds good just sitting in the driveway idling..
but perhaps I did knock something out on the fuel system side of
things when I was pulling up on the fuel distributor/fuel mixture/etc
housing.

Any suggestions are appreciated!

Don't drop the tank! Your just making work for yourself. The hole through
which you have to clean the tank is the same size weather you drop the tank
or not.

Remove the fuel pump and boot and the fuel sending unit. Siphon out
everything you can and wipe the rest out with rags. Get some Gunk engine
degreaser and spray the entire inside of the tank. Scrub it out with a long
handled toilet brush. Work around the baffles and wire retainers. Hose the
inside down with your garden hose and then vacuum it out with a wet dry shop
vac. Repeat as many times as in necessary. When clean, wipe it our with a
clean towel and let ir dry for a few days before you reassemble and fill it
with fuel. A simple $9.00 flourescent work light from WalMart fits right into
the sending unit hole so you can see how you're doing, but make sure you only
use the light after your first flush with the hose.

I'm in the middle of rebuilding my brakes, so I have a tip sheet from PJ
Grady.  It sounds like it might be the answer to your problem.  He didn't
put a copyright on it, so since it's a safety issue I'll do an OCR scan.
For using his tip sheet, I'll be a shill too:  His rebuilt brake calipers
and master cylinder are top quality.  They are beautifully zinc plated to a
golden color.  They have all the top quality stuff in them that you won't
get from a regular auto parts store.

This new brake master cylinder often requires adjustment of the brake
booster piston rod to avoid extra pedal travel when braking.  If after
installation and proper bleeding you experience a low pedal remove the two
17m mounting nuts and pull master cylinder away to allow access to booster
(you can leave brake lines attached) adjust booster rod using 8m socket
wrench to adjust rod.  Have someone depress brake pedal or use appropriate
length bar wedged against seat bottom to allow access to booster pin and
hold with pliers while adjusting 8m rod setscrew.  Mark socket with a black
magic marker and turn rod counter clockwise to lengthen.  Usually two to
three full turns are required to give a good solid pedal.  There should be
at least 2" of pedal travel before brakes apply or dragging and subsequent
rotor damage may occur.  After adjusting road test car and then check wheels
for brake dragging before you're done.

The label on the model's box describe the car as a 1981 DeLorean LK.  What
does the "LK" stand for?  Did some foreigner forget to delete the
accumulated typos at the end of his sentence before he pressed the 'print'
button on the typesetting machine?

What is the deal with the little dark dots in the front and rear lights?  It
looks like the manufacture intended these to be windows for battery operated
lights.  But I don't see any battery compartment.

I am impressed by the detail and accuracy.  But that is not what I enjoy
most about this model.  What I really love is being familiar enough with the
real thing to be able to notice and enjoy many of the inaccuracies.

Has anyone noticed that the front spoiler is bent up in the center?  This
only happens on real DeLoreans that have front end damage.  I suppose that
the car that this model was based on has the front spoiler bent up the same
way.  The guy who did the measurements probably didn't know better.

They call the car an '81 model, but it has exhaust tips that look much more
like an '82.

The engine is missing the throttle-spool shield recall, but the photo of the
real engine on the box shows this cover.  However, I don't suppose that any
water will get in there and freeze it stuck on the model.

Since most Sunstar models are 1:18 scale, will I be able to do an engine
swap?  And don't give me that purist crap.

The header bottle has been upgraded with the aftermarket stainless steel
bottle.  I suppose they were worried that the original plastic ones would
break?  I don't think they intended this to be a concours edition model.  :)

My rear view mirror is not adjusted properly, someone left the ash tray
open, and the steering wheel is the wrong color.  (big smile)

These models have the DeLorean name on the bumper painted white.  This isn't
factory original.  A lot of people put stainless inset letters in there, but
I haven't seen white on a production car before.  Is someone going to come
out with a miniature stainless lettering kit?

This model appears to have the upgraded lowered front springs.  But the
photo on the package shows a car that has the original tall springs.  I
suppose that when they come out with the BTTF version that instead of
lowered front springs there will be little bricks in the front storage
compartment to lower the front like they did in the movie.

Hey, they fixed the front sway bar.  It looks real heavy-duty, and it
doesn't interfere with the steering.

Since this car has so many aftermarket accessories, is someone going to come
out with a faux stainless door sill kit?  I also would like to lightly tint
the windows & cover up those dark holes in the headlights.  That really
looks weird.

The passenger door doesn't stay up, but I never like leaving my doors open.
When at shows if there is another DeLorean there, I guarantee they will at
least leave one door open, usually both along with the hood & engine cover.
I think the car looks better with everything closed anyway.

I love this car!  You must have one.  Buy it now!

Power steering really isn't necessary with
the DeLorean because the steering effort is
pretty light.  A power steering setup would
require another belt-driven accessory at an
already congested part of the car, plus more
plumbing from the very rear of the car to the
very front.  More weight, less power at the
rear wheels.  Another side-effect of power
steering is a loss of feedback from the
front suspension to the driver's hands.
Power steering tends to numb the sensitivity
of the steering wheel to what is going on
at the road.  I for one prefer sports cars
that don't have power steering or power
brakes.

That is a pretty broad statement to make based
on very little information.  Lotus brings in far
more money (and profit) on it's engineering
consultancy business than it has ever made making
race or road cars.  In fact, it's the contract
engineering side of the company that the previous
owners were most interested in.  Most sports cars
from major manufacturers have benefitted from
suspension and chassis tuning by Lotus and
some have even had engine tuning done by Lotus.

Subject: DeLorean for Sale

Hi list,
        Well, after moving across country I have decided that it's no longer
feasible to have a pair of DeLoreans out here in Arizona.  I'd like to find
a good home for one and that's why I am sending the email to this list.  I
want to stay away from ebay because the car is not in my possession.  Right
now it is in good hands with Rob Grady in New York.  I am not able to show
it and go for rides with prospective buyers and its also unfair to ask Rob
for the same.

Here's what I can tell you:
It's a 1982 built in November of 1981.  It is white but the paint is shot.
As far as I can tell the grain is in tact, probably why the paint didn't
hold up.  I am the third owner and it was a Florida car.  It has just over
17,000 miles on it and I think I have all the receipts for it from the
previous owners.  The engine and transmission are good.  The frame appears
good and only has a bit of surface rust.  It needs a RHS exhaust manifold
gasket, RHS interior windshield A-pillar (I have it), small black body work
(left front cracked/ripped under the hood), radio (antenna works), fuse box
(Rob has the spare I gave him).

Here's the good news:
The interior is nice and some of it was redone about 4 years ago.  The dash
is sunburned from FL but the Binnacle appears to be good.  Rob has cleaned
the fuel tank, pump, done new boots and tankzilla.  He's currently working
on the checklist for it.  I was going to have it restored but for someone
who likes to do some of their own work you could have Rob do the major stuff
since it is there and do the rest yourself.  Thanks to DanRC30 it has a new
HCR angle drive and bracket, otterstat, coolant hose and self-bleeder kit,
defroster switch, mode switch, and misc other goodies.  It has polished late
silver wheels with almost new Yokohama AVS's on it.  It runs strong and
shifts well.  Both Dan and Rob have driven it along with myself.  They would
be happy to talk with you about it, but I think you'd have better luck with
Dan as Rob is so busy....:)

Here is my current plan: If I cannot find anyone who wants to give her a
good home I am going to have Rob do a full restoration and ship it out here.
I'll have a custom paint job done since I can't see stripping it.  Our
winters are when we get out and drive, and our summers are too hot to be in
the garage....:)

So here's my offer--I have over $12,000 into this car and it is definitely
going to be at least a $20,000 rule car since I am going to have the work
done by Rob and just drive away with a finished product.  I am asking
$12,000 for the car and all the parts that go with it.  Since it is in line
to be done at Rob's you can take my spot and have him do anything you want
or you can have him ship it to you.  You can even drive it away from there
if you wish right now.   Any takers?

two pictures of it if you would like to see a white DeLorean.  It needs a
good home.  Anyone up for the challenge?

Actually, out of the 20 pages, four and one-third pages were advertisements,
or about 20%. To contrast, a DeLorean World from the Spring of 2000 (one
that happened to be sitting around here at the office) was 10.5 out of 40
pages, or about 25%. Either way, I don't think it's unacceptable for a small
publication that at this time is still supported entirely by us.

Ace *is* a good friend of mine, and I used to live in Costa Rica and work
with him there. He bought his DeLorean from us, and when we were creating
the first issue, he offered to help. We wanted to keep the idea of the
magazine under wraps until the open house, and the best way to do that was
to limit number of people who knew. I also thought the story behind the
first DeLorean in Costa Rica was interesting. The people there seem to think
it is cool. If you want to see some skullduggery, there are much easier
places to find it in the world than there.

Judging from the cars that we see come in at the shop, and we see at shows
and tech events, a lot of people need to know if not HOW to do this, that
the parts exist (all four varieties) and are available. Not everyone is as
knowledgeable as you, Marc. And even though yours is cracked, and even
though you may not have thought to order one before reading that little bit
of info, I won't be disappointed if you call one of the other vendors to
order it. :-)

Wow! Apparently there is no room for levity in this publication. You're the
second person that has commented on Anthony's editorial...out of more than
3,000 distributed. In any case, I hadn't banked on that. Who said it had to
be related to DeLoreans to be in there? We sure didn't. Jeez.

You'd have to ask Ryan why he didn't write about it. I'd forgotten about it
myself, and as his friend, *I* fronted him the cash to buy them! Gasp! Guess

Who is Jake Elwood? That's a closely guarded secret! Don't take yourself and
everything else so seriously. A little levity, a little mystery - neither

"Jake Elwood" sightings to go along with "Elvis" sightings...

We had the poster commissioned, and put our logo on it. We didn't expect the
other vendors to want to carry it, so yes, it's exclusively from DeLorean

Since you didn't mention it, let me! You can buy the door handles from
DeLorean Motor Company in Houston. What wasn't mentioned, and probably will
not be, either, is the fact that we have sold the door handles to all the
other vendors as well, except for ONE. Most of you will catch my drift and
know who that ONE vendor is. In any case, as 'deloreans' is for time being
supported by DeLorean Motor Company, it's going to favor DeLorean Motor
Company products and services.

No, you don't have anything to gain personally. But you and I don't seem to
see eye-to-eye on many things, and rather than discuss them privately (or
offer to contribute in some way) you criticize instead. One of the basic
tenets of a manager is "praise in public, criticize in private". I have been
guilty of that myself in the past. But now in particular, I see little
constructive in your criticisms after several re-readings, just slanted
criticisms...but more on that below.

now because *I* said something.  :P  But I doubt it.

I think you are confused. The DOA is supposed to be a non-profit
organization, and people's problems with them lie with the archaic makeup of
the board, the by-laws and election process. The fact that they have not
published ANY financial info in as long as I can remember lends to the aura
of secrecy. Personally, I stopped bashing the DOA when I dropped my
membership a few years ago.

I don't think anyone doubts for a minute that DeLorean Motor Company is in
business to make money. Nor do I think we are 'duping' anyone, nor are we
trying to. It's very clear...everyone has seen the first issue, and will see
the second one as well at absolutely no charge.  For the couple of hundred
subscribers already, their paid subscription will start with the THIRD issue
mailed in February.

DeLorean Motor Company (Houston) has done more for the good name and image
of the DeLorean in the past five years than John DeLorean has been able to
do in the past twenty. Don't get me wrong, I like JZD. I think he's a great
person with the best of intentions. We took the step of securing a trademark
on the "DMC" logo (we have done nothing with the name of the car) to protect
the investment we have made in the good name of the car and company. If he
or his counsel take issue with any of that, they haven't made us aware of
it. And we are a LOT easier to locate than he is.

I've enjoyed everyone's perspectives over the last few weeks. It's about as
we expected. Those people, who for one reason or another, think we're trying
to take over the world are cutting down and belittling the work of others
while offering little or no contributions of their own. In this instance,
Marc, you are no different.

Then there are others, coming from unexpected quarters sometimes, who
understand and appreciate what we are trying to do and are more reasonable.
They seem to 'get it'.

The purpose of producing the magazine was two-fold - increase awareness of
the DeLorean marque/brand (including parts/service availability) and provide
an alternative to DeLorean World, which many people had complained about for
years. Anyone could have done it. No one did. When you step up and create
something when no one does, I hope that no one comes down on you for it.

Incidentally, while I *did* take about 2 years off from working full-time
for DeLorean Motor Company to live in Costa Rica, I am back in the office in
Houston pretty much full-time (save for a few days each month spent in Costa
Rica with my family). I invite ANYONE who feels the need to share their
thoughts to call me - for free - at 800/872-3621. I won't ask for your VIN
and won't ask you to call on your nickel just to chat.

So...Marc, Steve, Dan, Senator Pack, and the rest of the Northeastern bunch
that seem to go through this "Espey/DMC gang-bang" every time they have a
get-together...I'm not sure what I have done to piss you all off, but the
hobby is too small for us to have the bickering. I'm extending an olive
branch and invite you (and anyone who feels the same way you all seem to) to
chat with me and bury the hatchet. Now it's up to you.
