Subject: Stainless Scratchs

Well, a bush jumped out and bit my DeLorean.  Now there are a large number of scratches on the fender flair just behind the rear wheel.  My question is, what would be the best method of removing these scratches by hand?  I have a show coming up this weekend and would like to remove these scratches before that time.  Most of the scratches are very small and I believe that they can be removed very easily.  However, some (more than I would like) are a little deeper and may be a problem to remove - after I work on it for a little bit, I will have a better idea about how deep they are.  Can someone give me some quick suggestions on how I can remedy this issue.

My DeLorean has one original, and one newly made key (brand Orion). I
guess that a key shop can reproduce it without any problems.

B.t.w., my DeLorean is a one key car. The key fits in all the keyholes
(and works). Perhaps your locks have already been replaced in the past?

keys can be made for the existing locks.  Problem I had was finding a lock
smith that had a blank for the door.   Engine key was no problem. I finally
found a lock smith that ordered blanks and made the keys.  On my  Delorean,
even though the keys are double sided, they can only be made one way. We
went thru 4 blanks before fiinding the correct combination.    I had to buy
10 blanks before they would order them.

Has anyone ever found a good replacement for the window felt on the
DeLorean?  I'm on my 4th set now.  As soon as it gets a little warm out, the
felt completely falls off the rubber piece (the glue melts).  Has anyone
ever successfully put on any other type of felt, maybe like the little
rubber guides on modern cars?

As I have stated before only the Honda NSX in 1990 followed the same small
front / large rear wheel configuration as introduced successfully on the
DeLorean.

The DeLorean using this setup together with its weight distribution at 35/65
will ALWAYS roll back onto its wheels if rolled on a flat surface.  Of
course on irregular ground the end result cannot be 100% favourable so the
driver may require the door windows or the windscreen/shield to be kicked
out.

You're best option in this senario is to kickout the windshield. Luckly, the
DeLorean has a very low center of gravity and is unlikely to roll over.

This they do, but it does not necessarily indicate a safety problem.  In a
side impact collision, the door will remain in place to protect the
occupants (it would be wedged in place).  In a frontal impact collision,
having the door fly up provides some advantages.  First, it helps
dissipate some of the crash energy (just as parts flying off of race cars
help protect the driver).  And, having the door open makes it less likely
that the occupants will have to be cut out of the car.

It also means that you are more likely to be thrown from the car if you
aren't wearing your seat belt.

Supposedly, the doors have enough leverage to tilt the car far enough for
an average sized person to escape from a rollover.  But I don't know of
any DeLorean that's been rolled over with passsengers inside.

One of the references that profesional appraisers use is a book that
is printed by Kruse auctioneers annually on all the cars that are
auctioned by them. It lists if sold, condition, price, and reserve.
Although you could question if the condition is accurate it does give
a good guide as to the market and the trend.

Before we get to friendly with the doa I would like to see how they
report on the biggest delorean event in years in delorean world.
They conspicuosly don't report on anything outside their own sponsered
events or when they do they give it only a passing reference. It
would also be interesting if they report on the judging which took
place in Cleavland, it was of the highest caliber so far with some of
the most unusual deloreans ever assembled in 1 place. Also let's not
forget that JZD was there (he has yet to attend a doa event).I wait
to
see what Ken Koncelik would have to say about the doa. Let's see if
and when they put up a link to the memphis show in 2002 and give Ken
the credit he deserves for putting on the 2 best shows in years back
to back.

The early Deloreans had two keys, one for the doors and one for the
ignition.

Any competent locksmith should be able to replace faulty door locks and/or
have them keyed to match the ignition.  However, they may not be so adept at
disassembling Delorean doors so you may want to remove the inner panels in
advance.

You could try sandpaper on the deeper scratches. It may sound radical
but remember that the graining on the ss is just scratches but all in
the same direction and same depth. Be very careful to stay in the
same direction as the grain, if needed use masking tape as a guide
and
go back and forth in  very straight lines. Start with about #80-#100
grit and go LIGHTLY. If you are happy with the results work up to
about #220 and then finish with a "scotchbrite" pad. The ones the
delorean suppliers sell is aout the best coursesness. If the area is
flat use a backing block to keep the pressure even. You might want to
experiment on a less noticeable area first to get some practice.Also
work the area out into the surounding area.

I believe an upcoming DeLorean World will feature coverage of Ken
Koncelik's DeLorean Car Show in Cleveland.  If you are unsatisfied with
the article please do not complain to the DOA.  Complain to me.  I wrote
it.

However, I cannot take credit for the excellent photographs that accompany
the article.

I'm having a problem getting a tollbooth window out.  Its the
passenger side and I can't figure out what bolts to take off.  I have
the interior panels off and I can see all the inner workings.    I'm
sure it's a simple process, but if someone could show me the ways,

Nope. Judging by your vin, you have an '83.  They only use 1 key, unlike the
earlier cars which use 2.

I wanted to let everyone know about an upcoming car show at the BMW plant in
Greer, South Carolina the weekend of October 20-22.  Euro 2000 should be a
great time with driving events and plant tours.  The Visitor's Center will be
open, and all of you will be interested in seeing the BMW M1 with gullwing
doors they have on display.  The date of the car show is October 21.

Last year we had 4 DeLoreans, 3 from SC and 1 from TN.  I'm hoping we can get

last week or so i posted to the list seeking a reliable automatic
D, preferrably an 81 w/ gas flap, and black interior.

I was wondering if anyone knew what if any metal bracing there is embedded in the fiberglass of the D's roof panel (between the doors)  i.e.  Are the door hinges bolting essentially through fiberglass only or is there an embedded plate or plates of some sort?  I guess this requires someone either having tried to drill through this area or having seen a seriously damaged roof section which might have fractured the fiberglass exposing it's internals.

Somebody put the factory assembly drawings for the shift linkage that
shows this in detail. Look at the drawings labled PROCESS 1 thru 4.

These were put there in January, no idea who did it. Thanks whoever
