I'd definitely do A12 to Ipswich and A14/A140 from there (have done 
before). The A12 is a fast road and that'll get you most of the way there.

It's kind of even-stevens which way aroudn the M25 you want to go but 
you save yourself a quid and any queues at Dartford if you go north 
section.However this will take you past most of the main arteries (M40, 
M1, A1 and it always gets slow around at least one of them at that time 
of day). Going south section is usually clearer and is 5 lanes most of 
the way now, plus the new section round the M3 so that's not a worry.

One hell of a lot worse at 1700. The later the better.

One warning: There are only 3 services on the M25 - crazy but true. One 
is on the south section close to the A21, one is immediately north of 
the Dartford crossing, the other is at the foot of the A1.
