For a while it wasn't legal to do that either. Now they decided that 
common sense should prevail and imported cars are allowed a 
motorbike-sized FONT. However, this does not help with the rear of the D 
where the bezel sits outside the plate and even with a motorbike plate, 
it's too big. I picked my number on Lex because I worked out the size of 
the lettering and IIL 1611 fits in the hole.

There are countless D's running around with Statesplates over here, and 
several (including yours) with our equivalent (which are much cheaper 
and made of the proper material!) and I've yet to hear of anyone getting 
pulled because of it. If you do, ask said copper nicely how exactly he'd 
write the number any bigger?
