I think there's a difference in paying $50K for a rebuilt Delorean and
a typical used-car purchase. I see several reasons, for some people, to
pay the additional labor fees for a newer Delorean:
1) After paying the premium price, I don't think too many would intend
to sell it anytime soon.
2) Unlike typical cars, an good condition Delorean doesn't seem to sink
below about $20K, regardless of the vehicle age. That doesn't happen
with a Mustang, Camry or an SUV.
3) Automobiles, unless they're special, are poor investments anyway. If
you're looking for money back from a car purchase, I'd suggest you try
real estate instead.
4) You could easily spend the additional $25K you'd spend on a refurb'd
Delorean fixing up any other car, buying an RV (I did!) or something
else that wouldn't be as unique as a Delorean. Renovate a 60's Ford
Thunderbird and see what that costs you.
4) In my case, I just want to drive the car for a long time. In fact,
it would take a financial downturn for me to sell the car.
