Hi James,
I have used different techniques on my engine.
One time I had the engine brace and brackets on the firewall powdercoated a glossy black. That looked great and it still does. One advantage to powdercoating is that is somewhat flexible and it can flex with the metal under stress, like where an engine brace might experience stress.
Another time, I simply had my valve covers and intake manifold and a few other bits bead-blasted and painted with matte-finish gray engine paint, I think it was by VHT. That also still looks excellent after about 4 years.
Most recently, I had all my transmission mounts and exhaust brackets bead-blasted and I painted them with a glossy black VHT engine paint. I haven't even looked at them since I installed them but I imagine those are good too.
The biggest thing to do is get them professionally bead-blasted and cleaned up REALLY well. The paint will adhere better, and remember - usually less is more with paint. You don't want it to crack or run.
Also, any place where there will be significant torque against the paint, you will want to either mask it off or paint it very lightly. Otherwise, the paint could interfere with the torque setting. Probably more likely to cause trouble would be a grounding point that is now compromised due to paint between the two metals. If you keep these things in mind, you should be in good shape.
Good luck!
Andy

Subject: [DML] Repainting Engine Pieces
I had a quick question, whenever you guys repaint your engines to make
them look new again, what kind of paint do you use? I'd really like to
repaint my manifold, valve covers and a few other pieces but I
wouldn't have a clue on what to use. Should I Powder Coat them or use
the SS spray paint? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!
James
