Rick - The major item that jumps out of your post at me was the
incorrect pulley on the water pump. It sounds like you have a Volvo-
style pump with a bolt-on pulley, and that you have some form of
pulley on there that is not likely to be correct. The first thing
to assess is the belt alignment between the water pump pulley, the
main pulley, and the alternator pulley. My guess is that there is a
significant misalignment, and the added stresses on the alternator
bearings from running the belt crooked is what your main issue is.
You should carefully assess the belt alignment, and the condition of
the belt. If the incorrect pulley is the culprit in your case, and
the water pump is still serviceable, we have correct pulleys for the
Volvo-style pumps that will allow for proper belt alignment. Check
it out, and let the List know what you find.

should get a standard Volvo alternator to avoid this problem. What
do all of you think?
