Generally you should NOT wash an engine. You are asking for trouble.
Wiping is the safest way in my opinion. Any sort of pressure,
including air, can send loose grime into seals around the crank
shaft, water pump, electrical connections, alternator, the AC seals,
and around the injectors or spark plug wells (spark plug wells can
hold water a long time and may rust the plugs to the head).
Use some WD-40 on a cold engine and wipe it off (this stuff is great
for cleaning the aluminum engine and grease will met off) or around
non sensitive areas spray on some brake clean (the non-flammable
kind) and wipe off. But, be careful not to point the spray at
sensitive joints and connections.
