Thanks for the advice Dave.
I didn't think the new battery could have caused the problem but last night I would have believed anything. I did everything below with the ignition key turned on: I jumpered out the otterstat wires, no fans. I turned on the a/c and the compressor works, so the common diode can't be the problem. I jumpered out the 35amp circuit breaker for the fans, nothing. I checked the voltages on the fan fail module base with the ignition key on and no voltage! Tomorrow I'm going to pull the fan relay and test for voltage there. Whatever component/thing it was last night, it caused the fans to fail after being on for oly 2 seconds. The cooling system seems to be working fine now except for the fans. I lost about 2 gallons of antifreeze when I was replacing the rubber hoses and have put 2 gallons back in. I'm running out of things to check! I recently had the a/c system repaired for major leaks and the car had to run for a long time in hot weather with the fans
on. The alternator belt broke after I left the ac shopo and had to be replaced, that was lots of fun, which is why I decided to replace all the hoses because they were so bulged out with the water pump not working.
Thanks again for your advice.

In my experience the otterstat itself is very fragile in terms of
being overheated. I've watched them die in the process of being
overheated. Sometimes they short, usually they open.
