I had similar issues in my passenger door. You had to open the
passenger door using the inner handle or the passenger side lock
button would freeze up as you've described. As I recall, opening
the door with the outer handle was not completely unlatching the
front latch. (That's a vague recollection.)
I know you say you checked the linkages, but my linkages all looked
and were OK. They just needed lubrication. When lubricated with
lithium grease, the problem completely disappeared and has stayed
that way for 8 months.
Not saying this is your problem, but lubrication is probably not
going to be a bad thing.
