[DML] Cracked Dashboards

Okay here's a newbie question...
   
  In researching the eventual purchase of 17076, I saw a fair number of Deloreans with cracked dashboards.
   
  As 17076 has an unblemished dash, and I have a strong desire to keep it that way, is there any general word about what caused this problem?
