I can't answer why they would think 3.8 liter specifically, but JZD  worked 
for GM for ages.  It's probably a rumor that spread like wildfire,  stemming 
from that, and was accepted as gospel-like truth at some point.
 
...you have to admit it, though... a 3.8 GM would be nice.  :3
