Just got back from the eye doctor (how can a 43 year old man have a
cataract!) so I'm obviously late to this discussion , but:

AMC's first V-8 powered lift gate vehicle was the Hornet, not the
Pacer. In North America at least AMC did pioneer the liftgate (versus
drop down tailgate), circa 1970. The fullsize Ambassador and Matador
station wagons retained drop down tail gates until phased out in 1974
and 1978 respectively.

AMC's 1978 Concord is nothing more than a reskinned Hornet. It's 1980
4 wheel drive cousin Eagle retained the same sheet metal (wider fender
flares were simply bolt on plastic pieces).

The Pacer is important because AMC turned traditional vehicle design
on its head, finalizing the interior, including fabric & soft trim,
before ever deciding what the exterior should look like. Usually
design works from the outisde in. The general public remembers the
Pacer as being externally ugly. Everyone who has ever ridden in one
remembers them as being internally spacious & comfortable.

Apologies for any typos. My eyes are dilated as hell and I can't see
shit. Even a cataract is better than this!
