The ones I have seen operate using infrared transmitters on the back of the
steering wheel, with a receiver on the dash.  You would have to have the
power source in the wheel, obviously.

You may want to check out some custome car stereo websites as this has been
done quite a bit.  Someone may have another way of doing it now.  Who knows,
there may be a kit available.

There are a few forums out there where people share information like this.

This one is mighty odd, so just bear with me....

Has anyone ever heard of an widget for the steering column that would 
let you put switches/power to the steering wheel?

Does that make sense? I could easily design something up that will do 
it, but was wondering if anyone else has done it or heard of it 
before....
