This is only a good idea, if you select an engine that
can be easily mated to the original gearbox.

There are not a lot of transmissions to choose from,
which is why many of the DMC conversions end up using
Porsche.  It is configured for rear-engine, and
because it is popular with kit cars and dune buggys
there are plenty of adapters to mount a Porsche trans
to just most popular engines.

There are also a lot more parts for the Porsche boxes
(at least here in the USA) than the Renault box.
