You still spent $1,000.00 on another car, plus maintenance, insurance, fuel,
expenses related to the new fuel you want to burn, and the cost of making
that fuel.

You mentioned driving very few miles round trip to work.  So, regardless of
the other expenses, if you spent $20.00 a week in fuel, that $1,000.00
Wabbit is fifty weeks of gas for your other car.  Just off the top of my
head, given no other unexpected expenses which is never the case, you are
looking at close to two years before you break even.

Granted, I think it is an interesting project.

$25,000+ Hybrid that gets 38-45 MPG.

VS.

My $1,000 Diesel Rabbit that almost gets 50 MPG.

Guess which one is saving money?
