[DMCForum] Re: de-emissioning (Ari)

Ari,

Bill knows. He just chooses to do things his way.

Despite the fact that I am frustrated that engines are getting so
complex, I acknowledge the fact that these advancements contribute
to cleaner, more efficient engines.

However, I've seen 35 year-old carburated vehicles that passed
emissions testing better than some newer cars. Why? Because one
owner cared for his car and the other didn't. Unfortunately, the
vast majority of owners rarely keep their engines in tune the way
the manufacturers intended. This voids the benefit of the technology
under the hood. Most of us here don't fit into that category because
we're car buffs and not soccer-moms.

When I was stationed on the Saudi peninsula, my driver Amjad was
critiqueing my choice of vehicle. With disdain he said "American
cars are too, too big. Burn too much gas." I looked him square in
the eye and said "Amjad, you drive me to the port at 110 mph (Yes,
mph, not KPH) every damn day. You easily consume more fuel than I do
back home. You negate the advantages of your small van with your
poor driving habits so don't lecture me about buying the DeLorean".
