[DMCForum] Re: DeLorean Wanted

Agreed on the "fixer-upper" vs. "daily driver" status of a car.
Although, there is one more thing to keep in mind too. And that is
perception of the individual owner. Some owners think that if a car
needs alot of maintenance work, then it's got alot of problems. Such
as if you had to total together a tune-up, some new belts, and a new
battery, it's a bit more than just some pocket change. None the less,
these are simply wear-able items that are needed to continue the
relability of a good car.

Now on the flip side of this, if someone has to replace a 20+ year old
water pump, they don't see that as a problem. That's just chocked up
as a "routine repair", and not a problem the car had. Even if it  Same
with the A/C system needing a charge, or the electrical grounds being
cleaned, etc. These are vital items to the car's reliability, that
might not otherwise be figured in to the total cost, due to a person's
particular point of view, since they view these items as "operating
cost", and not repaired problems.

And that is the biggest flaw with the percieved "$20K Rule". Nothing
was ever laid out specificly to define the guidelines of it. So many
things are omitted from totals, or unessisary expenditures have been
added in, simply to get the desired result that a person wants. Be it
to prove this *rule* true, or false.

I was within that rule for a long time. I had some damaged cosmetics,
but then again, I chose to omit those items, because I didn't believe
them to be what contributes to a car's reliability.
