Sorry for the delay, I have been hind of busy....

Yes the simplest tranny for you to install will probably be a later
901.  It will hold up just fine, I have a friend who at the moment is
running about 300hp through a stock 901 tranny with no problems. 
However personally I would go with the G50 to get a 6-speed.  If you
want custom gearing Dave White Racing in Tampa I believe charges about
$1200 to rebuild a 901 with custom ratios and new bearings, syncros, and
seals.
