[DMCForum] Re: Lotsa small spines, or few big spines? (Martin)

Transmission was a pain to mate even with the engine sitting on the
ground. There may be something twitchy with the position of my input
shaft (remember: the old clutch disc wasn't sliding free). Aren't any
imperfections in the splines themselves that prevent new discs from
test sliding, so if anything's wrong I am going to suspect either an
imperceptible bend in the shaft, or a bad angle of a straight shaft.
Drives fine now (no unwanted vibration and does release on at least
one side) so I'm not about to disturb it. May have shortened life
expectancy of the new disc, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

BTW: I have installed 10 spline transmissions purposefully using the
input shaft to guide them back to the engine (pulled by the bolts). I
really don't think you can do that with fine splines. Or at least I
couldn't.

Perhaps Americans can get away with smaller ID shafts because we use
better steel... (Perhaps that's why our splines don't deform either).
