Re: [DMCForum] AOL...

OK, Pop3 is a collection protocol, not one that "squirts" mail directly
into your computer. That is SMTP, on which the whole world's e-mail
system works. If your ISP has decent anti-virus scanning, there should
be no problem with receiving virii from home. I set up the system myself
at my former company (and several customers of it). It's cheap and easy
to do. SMTP is a point-to-point protocol and as such very difficult to
intercept. As long as you take some basic precautions on receiving mail
(which all ISPs should).

Personally, I realised years ago that 99% of virii are exploiting a
weakness in a Micro$oft product. I use Netscape Communicator and have no
anti-virus software nor a personal firewall. I just use a tiny
proportion of my brain and don't click on attachments from anyone I don'
t know and keep half an eye on the encyclopaedia on Symantec's website
if I'm not sure.

The system at my former company employed a Raptor firewall, Mailsweeper
on a DMZ, plus Sophos AV, auto-updating itself every 4 hours. It was up
and running without change for 2 years and as far as I know is still
going strong.
