They didn't use a real delorean to smash with the train. I have a 
tape called : The secrets of the back to the future trilogy and it 
shows the miniature train and delorean that they made to shoot those 
scenes.
We can always ask Bob Gale to confirm :)
BTW who's going to the BTTF screening in LA on Feb 1? I'm packing my 
bags! Actually not 100% sure, but 80%.
